King of Pop, You Will Be Missed

I just saw this on the news and I still can't rightly wrap my head around it. Michael Jackson has passed away. I realize that perhaps not everyone sees Michael in the best light, but being raised around his music and his dancing, and even performing Thriller at this years Prom; all I can say is that I will miss him.

He was a man of great talent, that is certain. He always had a bad rap, thanks in part to the media. Whatever you think of MJ, you cannot deny he sang great music and was a great dancer. Plus, he was born in my great state.

Thread moved to the Entertainment in Members' Lounge because, while Mr. Jackson was a lot of things, he was never a Japanese.

I wonder if we will ever know what really happened to him. Whether we like it or not, we
will be hearing/reading about him A LOT in the coming days.

Although I was never a fan of his, the news was quite a shock to wake up to this morning.

I wasn't like a huge, huge fan, but there's no doubt that he made some phenomenally genius pop records that will live forever and he was a part of everyone's life in some form or shape as one of the greatest entertainers the world has ever produced.

I was very aware of his music in the 90s, I would even go as far as to say I was a fan at one point. Although he was a strange character who may or may not have done some very questionable things, he did have quite an impact on me and for that I thank him.

R.I.P He was hounded practically all his life, I hope now as Elizabeth said he finds that peace that never found him.

There are reports that Jackson may have overdosed on painkillers in the lead up to his O2 concerts that were due to start next month.

It's almost a cliche today, but the man was definately a lonely, lost, amazingly shy, fragile, otherwordly figure that didn't have a childhood and was imprisoned by his celebrity life. Persecuted by no shortage of untalented parasites who wanted to feed off his special qualities. A mad genius. With the added trauma of suffering an emotionally devastating skin disorder and suppressing the embarrassment in private. I'm certainly going to be the last to judge. No one will ever come close to walking in those shoes.

Fame really truly is more of a monster than people can imagine.

I think he knew, though, how it would end, and pretty much everyone around him predicted, that just like with Elvis....And most prodigies cannot handle the spotlight they are given. There almost seems an inevitably about his death, a life spiralling out of control with seemingly no-where to go.


The music, at least, will endure as a work of art and be remembered and bring great joy to anyone who listens.

I believe that is something they picked up from the British tabloids quite a long time ago.

I never actually liked his music or his dancing (not denying his talent/vocal power & range), but the realization that such 'giants' can just die makes me a bit uncomfortable. He was, like many other artists, a remnant of a different era the generation before mine lived in. Feels like we lost something again that now only exists in history books.

I saw on this morning's Japanese news variety show that they had a MJ tribute show at the Appollo last night. There will be many more, I am sure.

Sheryl Crow and Usher doing a duet on "I Just Can't Stop Loving You", Maroon 5 is joined by Eddie Van Halen for their rendition of "Beat It", Justin Timberlake backed by SWV singing "Human Nature", Whitney Houston plugging her upcoming album while wobbling her way through "You Are Not Alone", and to top it all off, Diana Ross singing a medley.... of her own hits.

I agree with what Derfel said. Whether we liked him/his music or not, he had really ingrained himself in our collective consciousness.

As a person who was smack in the middle of it, I've always found it weird when the 80's music was referred to as "Oldies" by young people. I think I understand now, with MJ's passing, that each time we lose a popular figure from that era, that decade, and our youth go further and further away from us into the past even for people of my generation. I mean, sure, I've known that before, but someone like him passing away has made me really feel that for the first time.

I hope Michael rests in peace now, he certainly had a very full life, but I feel sorry for him because of all he went through, I hope he can find peace and happiness now at least.
