Now I'm not sure if this is right or not so I want to check before I learn this way.

According to Japanese.about.com there are kun-readings and on-reading for kanji eg.

kun-reading Migi & on-reading u or yuu. Is this right? also, if it is right are the on-readings how you pronounce the kanji when used with other kanji?.


(I'm just starting kanji, that's why I'm making sure. Sorry if this is obvious)

I'm only using the internet at the moment because I'm not sure what textbook would be best to get.

The internet can be a great source of confusion and misinformation if you're not careful.

The Genki series of textbooks are widely used and frequently recommended. I would strongly suggest also acquiring and using the associated workbooks and audio materials.

In addition the CosCom Kanji Odyssey materials are very good (as a supplement to a textbook, for kanji, not as a replacement to a textbook): Learning Materials of Japanese Language - Kanji

They have free samples for fifty basic/common kanji, that will give you an understanding of the style of the materials:
