Jpop VS Jrock... Split it?

What to do with the Jpop section?

O_O absolutely not. rock and pop are two completely different musical styles with their own conventions.

Isn't j-rock just j-pop with fewer showa tunes and more powerchords?
Maybe some of the 'lighter' rock could be seen that way, but in general no.
Although I wouldn't phrase it in Yokan's way either.
Some rock is nearer to 'pop' in style, or some has a same derivation.
And you could see that some of the most popular rock, is kind of watered down in terms of its 'rockness' (not sure how else to phrase it).
But Japan also has, uhhh, 'proper' rock 😊
And there are heavy metal and punk and grindcore bands and stuff as well.
In fact, all the different genres of music you find everywhere else.
And some musicians cross between genres.
But that's not really what this thread is about. 😌

Yeah, what Kinsao said :P

It seems most of us, myself included, are all into splitting at least some things. Anyone who had voted to keep things as they are care to share their input? I know the categorization issue might still haunt some people, but are there any other concerns people might have?

Yeah, 7people voted for let it stay the same, but why do you want to keep it the same? share your opinion please!

Split it into good music and bad music, it would be funnier to see how everybody discuss about it rather than useless polls where we will probably see arguments like: "I guess it is rock, it has an electric guitar on it!!" or "it is pop, the singer is so kawaii 😊 "

Thanks a lot... hahahaha.

Split it into good music and bad music,
That cracked me up!
Oh yeah... we should do that... :giggle: then I could visit only the 'good music' section. :-)

It's pretty well definite it will be split - I'll try and hurry it up.

It doesn't really matter if it is jrock or jpop, many artists mix those two (Gackt etc) so it' OK to post them in the same place but I think that maybe it should be changed to Jmusic, that would be a more fair name to it where all music styles can be discussed.

I think some people don't read the first post of this thread!!! and I hope that the until now 9 people who want this subforum to stay the same give their opinion!!!!!

Lightbulb

Just change the name 'j-pop' to 'j-music'?...😌 No need for a whole heated discussion on the subject. It's worked ever since this forum was set up, don't see why it should change now.

I think that will be included as one of the changes.

Actually, the fact that there is in fact some discussion on it at the very least indicates that there are severe problems in things as it is. The point is: it hasn't worked well. (hint: read Dutch Baka's first post here, and the subsequent replies)

(sorry for the double-post. the editing bug struck again, but now it seems to be fine...)

Yep. The tyranny of cursory reading...

The problem with many people who argue for it staying the same is that they keep treading on territory that's already been discussed. I've no problems otherwise, as long as they build upon the discussion, not force us to go back. As it stands, they don't seem to acknowledge why others think it's a problem. So please, I'll reiterate:

Read the first post to understand why we are discussing this.

To make things extra-easy, I'll even take you by the hand and show you that the post can be found here.
Jpop VS Jrock... Split it?

I see. ^^ I'd be pretty happy with just changing the name to 'J-music' but I don't mind, even if it is put in to sub-sections. :-)

Any news on what's gonna happen Kinsao?

My opinion in a nutshell.

I would have to agree with Dutch Baka for several reasons.

1. If the Administration can find the time to start a NEW FORUM for China, they should be able to have the time to do this for J-pop.

2. I have blocked the J-pop category partly for the reasons given in the OP. If there was a separate category for just regular popular Japanese music, a la Dreams Come True, Spitz, Puffy, etc., I would not block that unless it turned into the same condition as J-rock is now. Somehow I doubt that would happen any time soon.

3. I have posted in the current J-pop section on a few occasions. Therefore it is true that I for one do have interest in J-pop, but the current torrent of J-rock posts acts as a deterrent to my reading/posting of said threads.

4. It is a high traffic area, so it seems to me to deserve some special attention and categorization to foster its health. I think DB's suggestion is a good start.

That's all for now. I have to get to bed soon!

i think there should be a split section for the forums; it's a lot easier to search for and i don't have to waste as much time

Maybe if we combined 8 or 10 of the 7 page threads about which Visual Kei artists has the cutest bellybutton into one thread, there would be more room to talk about showa period pop music... but that won't happen.

No!! There shouldn`t be any split, I think a lot of artists/bands do both genres... like flake & adorable Gackt! ^_^

P.S. Hello everyone!! I`m new one here.. ^_~

Hi Sugargirl , welcome to Jref...

why shouldn't there be a split? only Jrock gets attention on this forum, and Jpop and other music not at all.. so thats the reason that there should be a split....

WE are still waiting, HOPING FOR AN MODERATOR OR ADVISOR TO SAY SOMETHING!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

pshhht. Gackt is pop, enough said. and he isn't adorable, he's over-rated.

Anyway...

Yeah o_O

and alot aren't multi-genre, like Alice Nine. and what about techno bands like Schwarz Stein and Velvet eden?

LoL Yokan.... anyway... you think one way, I - other!
Definitely, i don`t agree with you :) such song as Redemption, i can`t say that it`s pop... but music what he does, I think, is really fantastic ...

Dutch Baka 😜

Here's a thought, not everyone likes the exact same thing as you do.
