Japan has close relationships with some countries you wouldn't expect. I was surprised to learn that Japan has close ties with Brazil, a country America has very few ties with....
Hamamatsu has a large Brazilian population, many of whom have been in Japan for generations.

And, although some people might think Japan and China are very similar, the truth is that Japan and China don't have much of a relationship, other than some business. They've historically had an affect on each other's cultures, but that affect doesn't seem to be very strong today.
