I found Haruki Murakami's novels to be pretty good for reading practice. I read "Norway no mori" just after I passed level 2, and I found it to be a good fit for someone with about 1,000 kanji or so. He writes in the first person narrative which is very easy to follow and doesn't use overly complex kanji.
It was about 500 pages (little pages, I read the softcover) in 2 volumes. I found that I made regular reference to a dictionary for about the first 100-150 pages or so but after that (ie after I had learned most of the phrase/kanji he commonly used) I was able to read at a normal pace (I would guess just a bit slower than I would read an English book) and only make reference to my dictionaries sparingly.
