Japanese Electronic Dictonary

I recently just got a Casio one online. Just wanted to see if others who are learning the language have also purchased one. Sometimes I find the Koujien in the dictionaries to be quite useful, since many times you just can't find the appropriate word in a eng-jpn dictionary.

The one that I use is called xd-lp7600. It is on the market for about a year now, but does the job. For some reason I find Casio ones to be very user friendly.

What 英和和英辞書 does it use?

It uses one called "GJE 2". Don't know what the Japanese for that is though. It has just enough terms for my needs as a student.

It uses ジーニアス英和大辞典 & ジーニアス英和大辞典 by 大修館書店.

I found my friend's Casio Word Tank G55 to be considerably less user-friendly than my Sharp 8300 for one simple reason. Suppose I'm looking up 往復切符. On the Sharp model, once I've typed おうふ, the word I'm looking for is already the third on the list of potential matches. However, on the G55, it will never show up, no matter what you type because it's considered a compound word and to find it you must open the entry for 往復 and scroll down 'til you find what you're looking for. This can become a very frustrating process. Perhaps your casio handles this issue better.

I've heard the Genius dictionaries aren't that good, but I've never used one. I've heard that リーダズ is better.

One bone I have to pick with the Genius dictionaries is that a good 5-10% of the entries have one or two example sentences and no definition. This sends me looking to Koujien for the definiton because I can't always guess the meaning from one or two translated sentences.

I use a program called Kanji Browse (or something like that) which uses edict.

Right, I noticed that too. On the other hand, if the dictionary tries to hard in translating hard-to-translate words, then I'd rather not have it translate it at all. I feel like words like "nanibun", "dounimo" etc. fit this category of words

Yeah. I guess in some ways one just has to accept what GJE is trying to do and try to go with the flow. But still, there are some easily translatable words that it just doesn't bother to define, though I certainly can't think of any off the top of my head.

Yeah it's not perfect, but I got the casio one that I had primarily because it also supported a second language function (korean).

As in, it has Korean built in, or you can get a Korean expansion chip?

it already has korean built in, but you could get expansion chips for other foreign dictionaries as well. you have to either buy them or trade with a friend or something. i am learning japanese and korean at the same time, that's why i bought this one

A little OT, but are there any good translating programs for a pocket PC?

What do you mean by translating programs? There's a pretty good program with built-in dictionary that runs on Windows CE.
