Commemorations in Japan, the United States, and other parts of the world are being held to mark 80 years since the only use of atomic weapons in warfare and against civilian populations. The course of global conflict was forever altered in August 1945, when the United States dropped nuclear bombs on two Japanese cities just three days apart. By the end of that year, the combined death toll from the bombings was estimated to exceed 200,000 people.
