i'll continue with the off-topic-ness with some stuff i learned actually from the book i linked to... the Louis Vitton thing reminded me of a part in the book where the author describes the opening of a designer bag store in tokyo. women were lined up DAYS in advance to buy these bags, bags that are usually targeted at upper-class women. however, the women lined up where all middle-class or less, scrapping together their savings to buy a brand name bag. in the US (the country used as contrast in the book, but no doubt it's the same many other places) middle-class women, while sometimes wishing they had designer bags, know that such things are frivilous and too expensive. however, this is because foreign women see them as just bags, while japanese women see the brand as an identity. group mentality has always been valued the most in japan, while individuality has not. the word for "freedom" actually means "doing what one wants IN SPITE of the group's wishes", which is considered very bad. thus as individuality pushes its way onto the islands (as the ideals of countries like the US seep in), japanese are instead inclined to leech onto ANOTHER group to use as an identity, rather than look within themselves. so fashion, music, tv/movies, any one thing or hobby that influences a person, they consider as their identity, rather than the person underneath all those things.
