hey, um, I was wondering what exactly did the USSR take from Japan, land wise, after WWII? I looked around but can't find much... If anyone has some links or info i'd be grateful.

I've even heard that the A-Bombs were dropped partly because america didn't want the USSR walking into a territory and grabbing stuff the americans wanted.. so they quickly grabbed it for themselves...

hmm, well i heard that there was squaballing over land between japan and russia (land a little north of hokkaido ), and from the little Ive found, which is a map, lots of names of villages in russia, on islands near japan, are actually japanese, so I think something must've happened.

Yeah, it's a continuing bone of contention. The islands are called the Northern Territories, or the Kuriles. Here are some details:

Japan's relations with Russia are hampered by the two sides' inability to resolve their territorial dispute over the four islands that make up the Northern Territories (Kuriles), which the U.S.S.R. seized towards the end of World War II. The stalemate has prevented conclusion of a peace treaty formally ending the war. The United States supports Japan on the Northern Territories issue and recognizes Japanese sovereignty over the islands. Despite the lack of progress in resolving the Northern Territories dispute, Japan and Russia have made some progress in developing other aspects of the relationship. Even without a peace treaty, most Japanese do not feel that realtionship with the Russia is troubled.

So the Kuriles are Japanese...
but what about Sakhalin, just north of Hokkaido ? Was it ever a part of Japan, or has it always been Russian?

to answer Lina Invers' question, yeah, south sakhalin was Japanese between 1905 and 1945.
