So this is pretty huge news if you follow baseball at all, but I'm putting it here because I find this situation interesting. Ichiro has been in Seattle for over a decade, and (I heard this on a podcast, 耳で立ち読み、新刊ラジオ) he can speak English, but when he does press conferences he does them in Japanese because he's more confident in his expressive ability in his native language. So, here in this press conference he says what he wants to say, and then an interpreter follows him up with the English version.
There are some interesting points and questions to be made here about interpretation in general, and this kind of interpretation specifically. I'm wondering if he was listening to Ichiro, writing down most of what he said in English, and then just read off the page later, or if he wrote down an outline and tried to remember how Ichiro worded it, or if he wrote it down in Japanese and did what amounted to a sight translation, or if he pretty much had the gist of it ahead of time and just made a few notes and went from there. I've never actually done interpretation except in really informal situations ("what did he say?"), but I can say that even that is hard. I'm curious to know about how this guy did it and how much experience he has. That's a pretty big gig he landed there. Anyway, here's the video:
