How Much Of A Geek Are You?

Since I'm 46 and love anime, especially shojo, it occured to me that I might be not just an otaku, but a geek. And that got me to thinking about my other interests which could well be rooted in geekdom. So, here are those interests for your perusal:

1) I've been collecting, and reading comic books since I was 12
2) I'm a Trekkie, albeit a mild one
3) I love the "big bug" monster movies from the 50's
4) I'm a nut for true crime documentary shows on cable
5) Yes, I'm a sports nut too, my favorite four letters are E-S-P-N
6) I'm a member of a chat board about HDTV
7) I live for watching "World Poker Tour"
8) The Science Channel is mondo cool
9) "World's Wildest Police Videos" is terrific stuff
10) I can't eat my meals without a sports section in front of me

Well, those are the things that make me quite the well-rounded geek. If you dare, why don't you list the things that make YOU a geek!

- I love reading books... lots of books
- I love taking stuff apart and putting back together (without half of the pieces)
- I love making costumes... and never wearing them
- I love Disney movies... I even cry during a few of them
- I'm a HUGE Lord of the Rings fans
- I love Anime/Manga... and I waste lots of money on it
- I waste countless hours on forums like this being weird and answering stuff like this

...I can't really think of much more than that.

Well, I tried to take "how intelligent are you?" test in this thread, but embarrassed to say, English there was too difficult for me to get the meaning of those questions.

So, I gave up on that and tried the "Nerd Test" instead, and here's my score.



It said my nerdiness was "Not nerdy, but definitely not hip." ^^;
("hip"??)
So, who would be the king of nerd in JREF?

By the way, I'm not quite sure about the diffrence between these two words, "geek" and "nerd". (My dictionary says they means the same, but assuming from the post above, it must be a bit different...)
Anyone clue me in, please?

- I love reading loooonggg books, but they have to be interesting. I'm very picky about books. For example... i'm reading the english version of LOTR, because a week ago i've started to read it in my mothers tongue, but the translation is awful!!
- I spend hours behind the computer, chatting on msn, checking forums and posting around
- I don't love music. I'm obsessed with it! I can't live a day without music.
- I'm a big HP fan XD~

I got a nerd score of 18.. Not too bad I think. I do like being critical and quasi-intellectual, but I would rather not be called a nerd.

Having said that, occasionally I love to forget being critical and just be simple. Especially during football ("soccer" for the intellectually challenged) matches!! Nothing beats watching a good match with your mates and shouting and cursing a lot!!

About nerd and geek.

Hmm...all I can say is my personal mental image of the two words.

I think of nerd as someone who is socially inept due to too much interest in math and science. These are people who care lots about computers and calculators and equations, etc.

I think of a geek as someone who is just strange. Like someone who really really likes Spam for some reason and has bumper stickers and posters and stuff all for Spam.

I'm a music geek !

I'm pretty much obsessed with electronic music - Techno, Minimal,
Dub-Techno, Micro House, Deep House, Tech House, Ambient, some Breaks stuff. I still have affection for Drum & Bass, but I don't follow it much these days.

I thought I'd mellow with age and learn to like Pop, but it never happened.

I study it and analyse it like art. I love hearing new sounds and styles and am always fascinated by how musicians have mutated what is essentially a 4/4 Disco beat - and there's all the experimental stuff with crazy beats or no beats - some made with a studio full of equipment, some just on a lap top.

Much of the electronic music in Europe has been influenced by Germany - particularly after the Berlin wall came down and the artistic/musical explosion that followed, helped along by touring DJs from the U.S.

I wrote my college dissertation on the fusion of electronic music with sub-cultures - starting with first instruments (Theramin etc), and cultural references - Hip Hop sampling echoing Be-bop jazz loops,..Motown, Kraftwerk (Detroit phenomenon) Acid House...
I love it !


I have other aspects of geekiness - I'm fascinated by astronomy and cosmology (even if it's a bit mind-boggling sometimes).
I love Science Fiction too - especially darker stuff like Alien, Bladerunner, Philip.K.Dick books, but I think I've already said enough about the music.

Is watching WWE considered geeky now? I thought it was redneck-ish. I used to be a big wrestling fan, for Hogan's prime years in the WWF and then later with the emergence of the Rock, but lately it's just bad. I get my violence fix by watching UFC and things of that ilk.

I got a 22 on the nerd test. Lower than I thought it'd be, but some of the questions don't give nerds enough credit. I know plenty of geeks who go out to bars to drink...they just do it with a bunch of other nerdy people.
