How does one exchange old Japanese banknotes?

Hello to all of you!

Hope anyone of you could help me out with this matter. You see, I have some old Japanese banknotes that are still valid and redeemable at the Bank of Japan.

The only catch is that I must be present at their counter in order to exchange them or I can have someone (an agent) to do it for me.

I do not know anyone in Japan. I am not planning on visiting Japan.

How do I go about exchanging the notes? As I wanted to get some new banknotes and one banknote before it is being withdrew from the circulation.

Would appreciate any assistance or helpful information on this matter.

Have you considered that old bank notes can be worth more than their face value to collectors? Unless this is a lot of money and you're hard up for cash, you might consider hanging onto them against future appreciation in value.

Alternately, you might try taking them to any bank or similar institution in your area which handles foreign currency exchange and just directly receive the value in dollars.

I wish my old Japanese banknotes are valuable or in superb condition! But they are not.

That's why I am trying to find out how to exchange them. Foreign currency exchange booths only exchange current banknotes, not older issues. That's other problem.

So, are you based in Japan?
