Though my nationality is American, my ethnicity is East Indian (from India). I plan to travel to Japan this summer using a college foreign exchange student program. I have a feeling the family that I will go stay with will assume the American that is coming to Japan is probably some white dude, which I am not. I sometimes wonder how they are going to react. I may also be bringing a Chinese friend (who is American) which will be even stranger looking to them I am thinking.
First of all, how do Japanese people act toward people who look Middle Eastern or East Indian? I am assuming it is different reaction than what they might react to Whites, Blacks, or other Oriental Asians. How do they view people who look Middle Eastern or India Indian? Are they any prejudice or generalization toward people from that region (or originally from that region)?
