According to a survey by Tokyo in August 2020, there are 550 homeless people in Tokyo.

In the reddit thread, right at first there's a block that refers to the citations used. Bounce from there to wikipedia, which is what that links to, and one of the (highlighted) sources for the wikipedia article is:

I guess that's where the data came from.
No idea of the accuracy, but a comment or two referred to drug abuse as a cause of US homelessness, something that is not the case in japan--opiods, meth, cocaine, etc.
Another factor would be (minimum) wages that are so low, relative to living cost in some areas, that even having two such jobs is not enough to stay housed.

I didnt check the original thread there neither the sources yet, but its true that its a really low number, if its accurate then homelessness in Japan is definetely not a priority problem (but of course its still an issue ANYWAY in any case), as the proportion to the total population makes the rate so low

Reddit is really the place for everything and every topic, man Im in different types of forums but when eventually I get to Reddit I see the traffic difference…… its a whole world there, for any topic

I wouldn't say that it's a low number - there are large clusters of makeshift shelters along the sides of Tokyo's main rivers. Then there are the quasi-homeless people living in places like internet cafes - I think homelessness should be considered as a scale rather than a binary concept. I have no idea of the size of the problem compared with other countries.
