Groping on Japan's subways

Perhaps it's just because "Byakko such a violent girl", but I say we teach girls in school that if they feel a man groping them, break the offenders finger. Or have them carry a taser on trains and use them against offenders.
Not only do we have women feeling stronger about being able to stop it, they don't need to involve the cops, since it's almost guaranteed that the guys not going to be telling anyone the truth of how it happened (if he does, it's his shame and warning to his friends), and as an added bonus, it'll stop it from happening as often in the first place (I mean, to men on the board, if you got caught in this situation and got tasered, I'd bet you'd think twice about doing it the next time, right?)

That's because standing up for yourself is rude...
It's a mark of how Canadian (re:gaijin) I am, that I'm even willing to suggest it. But as rude as it is, it has been proven, that most people (especially those in comfort and power) generally won't change the system themselves unless there is a proven need for it.
And I'd say getting tasered a couple times on your way home would definately help with the whole "proven need" thing.

A male friend of mine (obviously gaijin) devised this "brilliant" plan for whenever he catches a groper in action.
1) Wait until the train arrives at the next stop.
2) As the train pulls to a halt, stand beside the chikan and grab his buttocks, squeezing as hard as possible.
3) Look the chikan straight in the face and say, "Waka, waka, waka!"
4) Exit the train.
5) ???
6) Profit

I have been touched indecently at least twice on the trains. Once with my husband standing next to me. I was so mad I was going to hit the pervert. My husband got all upset and begged me to not make a scene. I really think my making a scene to him was worse than the guy feeling me up! That I think is a problem. I also got the old line of "he was drunk and didn't know what he was doing". Funny but he touched the right parts and seemed to be able to remember where and how to feel up a woman! I think a lot off rude, poor behavior is tolerated if there is alcohol involved...not even drinking it, but as long as it's out you have an excuse. Overall though, I feel very safe on the trains and have only had problems at night.

One thing that didn't get mentioned in this thread is how the "women only" trains are always the last two cars.
This kind of upsets me. Why should women have to walk all the way down the platform to the last two cars of a LONG train to ride a "women only" car? It's like a punishment for speaking out. It would seem to me that, as vicitms, the women should have their car in the very MIDDLE of the train, not only for the easy of boarding, but as a constant visual reminder to men to keep their damn hands to themselves. As the last two cars of a train, these women only cars have low visibility, and as a result, so does the daily reminder of a groping problem.

That may work, undrentide! I remember hearing something about gorillas getting sexually excited by humans in certain cases. If that's true, then we just need to find the right gorilla!
At any rate, your list is more frightening than I would have imagined. I thought the cop thing was an isolated incident. Sad that it isn't (not to say that the general groping isn't sad).

Just something on the "last two car" bit. Last year my family and I flew over to Japan and the women only cars were in the middle of the train in Yokohama... I usually tell my wife and two girls to feel free to use those cars while I will try and take one near it if the trains are busy. Of course both my girls are brown belts in karate and I have taught them police holds/joint locks so I feel bad if someone touches them inappropriately.

Dunno, things might've changed a bit since I read the article a few years back, but female staff at a conference were actually trained to say sorry if I guy grabbed them.
I know my wife when she was a college student was groped a few times on the Tokyo subways. She didn't say a word, and just quietly suffered till the next stop.
That's not to say it's easy anymore, some women yell 'chikan' and everyone looks around and gets nervous that they'll be suspected. I've heard that subway survival 101 for men involves keeping your hands up and visible at all times.
On a reverse, a very few women grab the chikan and pull him off the train to look for the nearest love hotel, and most often the chikan is simply shocked.
Foreigners do seem to think that catching chikans is the way to go, not sure why the Japanese don't though. One foreigner saw a guy sitting and masturbating on the train while trying to look up highschool girl skirts, and naturally as foreigners do, she 'caught' him in the act. Pretty much everyone on the train seemed uncomfortable that she had done that. Certainly think a lot of people, including the highschool girls, knew he was doing that, but they chose to ignore it.

Wow, thanks for all the information in this thread - I honestly didn't know that groping was such a big problem. Will definitely keep that in mind if I'm stuck on a full body-to-body train. Haha might also carry around a little sewing kit (with needle included) so I can poke any wandering hands - thanks for that suggestion!

Sure, I'll ask her if it's from the wai wai section, but she's not one to read those kind of stories nor pass them along to other people as facts she read. Personally I don't really care if it's true or not, cause it doesn't affect me, I understand you're very interested in it not being true though. Pretty much. Sexless couples aren't that uncommon here in Japan.
I've heard strange stories from all over the world, some which are very well true, and while no one I know or myself would ever have done the same thing, I know there are a great variety of people out there, therefore I don't discount a few that would expect more from a groper.
As I see it, it may be close to 99 percent of those who caught a groper would turn them in or at least make the groper go through humiliation, but that still leaves 1 percent who are not the same as most people, and would expect more from a groper. I've read that flashers to whom a women is aroused by and the women makes an approach on get scared, and I wonder if a groper wouldn't have a dissimilar reaction, that to a woman who expected more he might just feel scared of.
As to Wai Wai, according to my wife anyways, and I feel I can trust her in things like this, there isn't really a gossip section in the major public newspapers of Japan. You can find plenty of gossip in sports newspapers, but not in the likes of Yomiuri or Asahi newspapers.

If/when we move to Japan I'll have to remember to keep my hands visible if I'm on a crowded train. It would really suck to be accused by one of those women who just wants to get money out of you. I wonder if they would be more or less likely to try that with a foreigner.
Anyway, I think when it really does happen the women need to stand up for themselves. If I caught anyone trying it with my wife they would be in really big trouble.

Hmm...I don't know about any anti-groping laws. I know there are signs and things to warn potential chikans. On those jam-packed, rush hour trains, I'm sure it'd be hard to tell who did what, it kinda sucks.
I'm with you on the whole keeping your hands where people can see them, because I'm often the only African-American person I see on the train. So it'd be a bit like "Where's Waldo?" only much much easier. If I did something stupid like that, they'd just be like "It was that bald, African-American, guy right there...he did it!"
