I'm sure many of you know by now about the issue of groping on subways. I came across some information and stories about the issue of groping via Feministing.com

Feministing | Young Feminists Blogging, Organizing, Kicking ***

There was also an article discussing the issue of "female only" trains, because of this problem. However, some men are upset by this development.

Are there any laws against this? Because there doesn't seem to be any from what I have seen. (If anyone has any info on laws against groping, please share it. :) )

But I would like to know your thoughts on this, quite frankly this only proves that Japanese society is still very far behind on these types of issues. I'm guessing that in Japanese society some people haven't came to the realization that women's bodies are not there for their groping pleasure.

There are at least two laws which is applied against "chikan" (groping).
- 窶ケツュツ青ァ窶堙ュ窶堋「窶堋ケ窶堙つ催 (indecent assault?) under criminal law
- 窶禿?ヒ彷窶塗ナス~ツ湘ー窶氾。 (Tokyo ordinance against disturbing the peace)
The latter is in case of Tokyo, similar ordinance has been introduced in many prefectures.

I see so many news articles that people got arrested for groping. It is great to see that they are punished, but at the same time I'm apalled as those reported on the news must be just a tip of a huge iceburg....

Sorry I don't have enough time to read the article and I might be missing something, but I've never heard men are complaining about the "women only" cars of the trains during rush hours. While there still are those who attempt groping, there are also quite a few men who are afraid of being mistaken for those gropers... (There are cases in which people arrested with fales accusation.)

The complaint as I've heard it regarding the women only cars is that during rush hour the women only cars are quite empty while it's almost impossible to breathe on the cars that men are allowed to ride in because they're so crowded.

My personal reaction to this is not to stop women only cars, but rather to decrease their number so that they are more in ratio with the actual number of riders (assuming the complaint is based on truth, of course).

My wife once had some guy putting his hands on her *** in the subway, she asked him to remove it but he didn't so she put a needle in his hand. That was 10 years ago or something though.

Most likely. Either that or the guy immediately realized he was doing something wrong and punished himself for it.

Aside from groping on trains, this girl I know who works as a dental hygenist said that lots of times when she's leaning over them to do something, older male patients will sit up and put their faces in her chest. She didn't say much else about it other than it's annoying (むかつく).

I remember a few weeks ago on the news there was a report of a cop who left work early and then stuck his hand under a high school girl's dress on a train. I was in shock about that one. A friggin' cop!

And this is not the first case ... policemen, staff member of Ministry of Justice (!), employee of city hall, university professor... Shame on them!
(Is it only me who think that maybe we should make someone they would fear - a gigantic, gorilla-like type - to grop those offenders... ?
They'll learn what horrible things they've done!)

That may work, undrentide! I remember hearing something about gorillas getting sexually excited by humans in certain cases. If that's true, then we just need to find the right gorilla! :D

At any rate, your list is more frightening than I would have imagined. I thought the cop thing was an isolated incident. Sad that it isn't (not to say that the general groping isn't sad).

Go to any company bonenkai or event party that involves a lot of alcohol with young women in attendance and watch all the oyaji let their inhibitions loose. Pretty shameless really but people just tend to shrug it off and blame it on the alcohol the day after for damage control.

Men are notorious for groping women on trains in Japan and I have read and heard that women are beginning to stand up for themselves recently by alerting people by yelling "Chikan" (pervert, molester, Peeping Tom) when they are groped.

In the past, and probably still today, many meekly say nothing out of shyness and fear and allow it to happen. Thus, the men felt like they could have their way with them. The only sad part about this is that there are more than a few women today who do it on purpose to unsuspecting males and then demand money from them in order to not press charges.

The instances may be few, but there are also women gropers on trains also as I had experienced a while back. I posted the story here last year.

Attached is a picture I took last year while in Japan of the signs for "Women Only Cars" for the morning rush.

Indeed. I had a friend who was hounded for weeks by one of her superiors and it culminated at a nomikai when he propositioned her. The next day, he acted like it didn't happen, even when confronted with it. Kind of ridiculous.

What?! Real gorillas?!
How could you, Glenn!!
Don't you have any mercy ... for the poor gorillas?
:D

Indeed it is sad. Actually the very idea makes me sick...
:(

I do believe Japan is trying to bring more attention to the problem, but not much progress being made in the area of making laws, except of course the "women only" trains. However, there was an attempt to place plain clothes cops on trains to catch gropers. I am concerned about issues of false of accusations of groping, too.

I have personally seen 2 guys beating off on the trains. And I mean really quite obviously. I chased one off the train because he was buzzing from one girl to the next and they were all freaking out but doing nothing but freeze up. There are a lot of real "hentai" on the trains here.

I could be wrong here but I'll just tell it like I saw it.. Japan is one of the few countries where the men are men, the women are women, and everyone's for the most part cool with this. I see it in the advertising, the day-to-day going-ons of the people, I sensed it from my students, etc. I mean its a liberal place and the men are welcome to experience the more delicate fashions, have nice hair, carry around those man-purses and whatnot (things you can't do in the West so much) and women participate in sports in the schools and whatnot, sure.

But under the surface, the men are the ones who run the place, all your salary men, trades workers, these are arenas where women are not highly represented and this is openly re-inforced to a certain degree. And women, in any service-oriented industry or public role, they are expected to look nice, speak in their high-register voice, be extra genki and pretty, etc.

When you have a generations-old social patriarchy like this you're going to get men forcing their will on women. That's just the way it is. Unfortunately the other side of the coin is that most women feel it's their duty to accept it and not buck the trend. Chalking it up to alcohol or an accident is a luxury in most cases.

Groping Accused, But Innocent, New Movie From Japan

-
I Just Didn't Do It
An angry and impassioned drama of Japanese legal hypocracy.
A young man accused of groping a girl on a train pleads innocent, and finds himself trapped in Japan's legal hell; the first film in 11 years from Masayuki Suo, director of Shall We Dance?

A sort of different twist on groping. This movies is at the "The Times BFI 51st London Film Festival"

I actually sat on the ladies Hankyu Kyoto carriage by accident. The train guard came along to inform me.

Discrmination is legal in Japan.

Having said that, I haven't seen a males only carriage.

I have been groped once on my butt, and sandwiched once by two female passengers.

I have no complaints at all as it felt rather good LOL..

Go to; Women only, please! The state of some of the people saying this. I have heard these sort of stories from makes you think "you wish"
If you are concerned then always use women only and hopefully men only for the groping women.

Not a lot different to many "office parties" I would think?

Does groping happens often in Japan? Sorry never heard that was a problem in Japan. Maybe women should react more powerful every time it happens. Hm, What is the law there concerning self difence? I hope you don't go to jail for biting up a guy that act this way.:)

News to me too. I think women and children only carriages is a great idea. As punching someone does not seem a solution the government have it in place, use it. The elders, had separate carriages out of respect for the females in their families, shame that respect is the thing every where in the world, we seem to have lost conformity to greed.

痴漢冤罪 - Wikipedia
http://www.rikkyo.ne.jp/univ/araki/chikanenzai/case/hibiyasencase.htm

false charge of chikans are increasing now like that

one day, a lady shouted " this man a chikan"
a salary man said " I am not a chikan"
a lady said " anyway let's get off the train at next station"
then a boy said " I saw him to do chikan.i will be a witness of that"

they get off at the next station.
a salaryman said " I never did that"
a lady said " tell that to the police "

a boy said " he has a family and job."
She says that it will lodge a complaint with the police though she is shame. and you dont want to be known this to your family and company.

You should write the apology and pay private settlement money.
a weak saraly man pay lot of many at last.

she is sick because of Trauma
he said "Money is necessary a little more. "
