I was referred here by Pachipro, a very nice gentleman who found my thread about Sophia University on ****edGaijin. I am hoping people are a bit more optimistic and cheerful on this forum, as the FG's tend to be bitter and extremely confrontational. I am excited about heading back to Japan regardless of how many people reitterate the "negatives." If Pachipro's character is any indication of others' on this site, I'm sure that my stay will be very enjoyable :)

First off, I'm a 20-year-old La Salle University student. I major in journalism with a dual minor in Leadership & Global Understanding and Japanese. As a kid, I had a best friend who was half Japanese, and I developed a passion for all things "J" at a really young age. I finally got a chance to experience Japan firsthand through a La Salle travel study course centered on the causes and results of Japan's Bubble Economy. We traveled all over the place: Kyoto , Kobe, Hiroshima, Miyajima Island, Shodoshima Island, and of course, Tokyo. My two weeks in Japan were undoubtedly the best two weeks of my life, and by the end of the trip I had realized my calling.

I've applied to Sophia University's faculty of Comparative Culture for the Spring 2007 semester. I find out January 30th (I'm rather hopeful after having visited Sophia and spent time with their director of International students, but cross your fingers for me anyway!) I plan to finish at Sophia, then enter JET or a private teaching contract for several years while freelancing and establishing a blog. After a few years, who knows? Maybe I'll drop a resume off at CNN, AP, BBC, Reuters, etc... That's the plan!

I look forward to meeting you all. Best wishes, and get in touch anytime!

Glad to see that you made it Jeff and I hope you enjoy your stay here. There's much info available. Good luck!

Welcome to JREF !!

Any friend of Pachipro is a friend of mine. I think you will find most JREF members here think Japan is heaven on earth and wish to go there, return there, or live there. There are a few members who attempt to tell of drawbacks about Japan life, but they are mostly ignored ; true believers KNOW Japan is just totally perfect! Hope to see your posts in the future. Lots of info here at JREF on just about everything to do with Japan for you to enjoy.

Welcome! I'm new here myself, and am acquainted with Pachipro from another forum. Speaking of Sophia University, during the 1983-84 period I used to buy Monumenta Nipponica whenever I could find it. It had many interesting articles.
