Favourite Japanese movie

I haven't seen that many real life Japanese movies, only one in fact. That being a really messed up/scarring movie entitled "Suicide Club."

Other than that I have seen very many anime series' and movies. Spirited Away, Princess Mononoke, and Totoro being the top 3!

I think this was the first movies, she played in. She was gourgious. But Oguri Shun didn't olayed in it to much. Maybe 10 minutes
 
I haven't seen too many Japanese movies, but I really enjoyed both Ju-On movies. I'm a big horror movie fan. The only problem with the movie was after watching it I didn't even feel safe hiding under the covers of my bed.

Oh! Shall We Dance? was a really good movie.

Then there are the animated movies, like Howl's Moving Castle and My Neighbor Totoro.
 
can some1 refresh my memory. What was that movie with those 2 guys that fulfill peoples dreams of murdering someone. They met there "clients" in some dirty bathroom.

Monday, Postman Blues (Sabu)
Go, Survive Style 5+, Battle Royal, Nobody Knows, Casshern, Kamikaze Girls, Negotiator: Mashita Masayoshi (Others)
Ghost in the Shell, Jin Roh, Nausicaﾃ､, Spirited Away (Anime)
 
ATW is a great film, but my favorite is Zatoichi. I especially like the musical scenes.:music:
That, the drinking, & the sword fighting make it a great drinking movie, too.
Oh, & Akira!
 
Definitely Seven Samurai, but Battle Royal was pretty interesting as well =P I tend to like the Japanese Dramas more than their movies. Wait! I also liked Mibu Gishi Den (When the last sword is drawn)
 
Does anyone know any good site where there is a large database (japanese movies) along with their summaries ?
 
I don't know if this helps, but there's a decent site for Japanese horror movies. It's called Snowblood Apple. It has a good amount of reviews/summaries for Ringu and whatnot. Actually, I think it's more Asian horror, but there's a good amount of Japanese movies there too.

I love both Moon Child and Kagen no Tsuki
just watched Azumi the other day and enjoyed it--I think I mainly liked the fact that she's a really tough girl and she's doing all of that
I loved seeing 7 Samurai... I thought it was great
and there's a few animated ones that I like-- Spirited Away, Tokyo Godfathers (I liked how fun it was XD)
that's all I can think of right now ^^
 
Hmm, let's see. I'd say my favorite are All About Lily Chou-Chou (2001) and Shinobi (2005). Must see for anyone who hasn't. Syra, what part of NC you from? I'm in Charlotte.
 
I do love Moon child. Gackt and Hyde are so awesome. But I also love all of Akira Kurosawa's films.

I'm going to mix it up a bit and drop the names of some very note-worthy Japanese films that I strongly feel should be experienced but haven't yet been mentioned (or maybe have but I didn't notice the name drops.)

Versus: A campy film that has a mixture of elements so diverse that you can't help but be entertained. It contains yakuza, martial arts, zombies, sorcerers, magical portals, and fun plot twists. It's not a movie for people who like their films to be serious. For fans of over the top action that aims to please with loads of entertainment and keeps itself fresh, this movie absolutely delivers. It is not a slow paced film either. It jumps right into the point and keeps the adrenaline pumping throughout.

Uzumaki: Movies of this nature are what make international cinema fun for Americans like myself whom get tired of seeing the same mundane routine. Uzumaki (as its name implies for you nihongo fluent people) revolves around the theme of spirals. The story is told from the perspective of a female student as she watches the madness of spiral obsession unfold around her as it slowly consumes her town. How this plays out, the creativity of the obsessions, and the unfolding plot is an eerie thing to watch. It is a great supernatural horror film that does a good job of haunting your perspective of reality.

There are many other great Japanese films that I've seen. Yet they've already been name dropped in some form or another.
 
I used to go to a lot of movies in Lil Tokyo in LA when they had a theater there in the 1980s. I got hooked on Tora-san movies, and ended up seeing many movies from the Shochiku studios. The best movie I ever saw there was "Hatchiko", about the famous Akita dog that was loyal to his master.
 
I'm a japanese horror movie addict which has made me branch out to other asian horror cinema as well..The first Japanese movie I ever saw (not including anime movies) was Ichi the Killer and that is what got me into a lot of these movies. Mm for my favorite i'd say it's a close tie between..

Three Extremes
Battle Royale
Chakushin Ari
 
ghevans, I just thought I'd let you know that i totally agree that All about lily chou chou is a brilliantly life-changing movie if you're willing to give it some time. For me it was one of those movies that just left me literally speechless for hours afterwards. There was just so much to go over in your head once you had finished watching it. I especially liked the beautiful cinematography and the clever splicing of form text over the screen throughout the movie.

Stronglyrecommend it as a movie to watch if you're looking for some serious food for thought.

I would also seriously recommend 'MIND GAME' by Studio 4C. They did some of the animatrix movies (the clever, mind-boggling ones) and 'MIND GAME' is a masterpiece.
 
SHICHIJIN NO SAMURAI (The 7 Samurais) without a doubt.

UMI WA MITE ITA (The sea is watching). I really love that movie by a posthumous script of KUROSAWA.

It's quite a nice movie.
