Do you like your national anthem?

Our national anthem; Advance Australia Fair

Australian's all let us rejoice
For we are young and free
We've golden soil
And wealth for toil
Our home is girt by sea
Our land abounds in nature's gifts
Of beauty rich and rare
In history's page let every stage
Advance Australia Fair
In joyful strains then let us sing
Advance Australia Fair

Whoever came up with the sentence "girt by sea" needs to be shot. I don't think one aussie knows what it means. And what in the heck is "joyful strains"? I reckon the person who wrote this had one too many VB's!!

I don't mind the song. I actually don't mind Kimigayo either, i think the music is rather regal. Hubby won't sing it, in fact he hates it. Says he hates everything it stands for, in honoring the emperor. He hates anything to do with tenno. Well, doesn't bother me at all. It's just a song.

Though i reckon Waltzing Matilda would be a better anthem for Australia.

I heard many japanese people complaining that their national anthem is too sad, not really putting soccer players in a fighting mood before a game.

I agree, but at least it fits to the spirit of Japan's peace constitution, when it is contrasted to other countries' national anthems, a significant portion of which involve reference to fighting.

I like the national anthem of the United States, and it's always had the ability to evoke some sort of emotion in me, having grown up the child of an "army brat." I think I'd be almost crazy not to feel something when taking my past into consideration. However, I do believe the E.U. has a far superior anthem.😊

I'm not sure but I'm afraid that my country's anthem is the only one that doesn't have a lyric. Anyway I like it.

I like very much the USA anthem. It has a strong and emotive spirit.
I confess I didn't like specially the Kimigayo Anthem, but after listening many times you can understand the cultural meaning of it.
Every anthem has its cultural meaning.

I like it

I do like the American National Anthem... but I like the "Star Spangled Banner" even more, because it tells a true story of victory when hope seemed gone for our country during its infant stages (so to speak).

The lyrics are the kind that made me want to learn more about the history it refers to, such as "and the rocketes red glare, the bombs bursting in air gave proof to the night that our flag was still there" and so on..

Yeah, I think both songs are beautifully worded, but Star Spanlged Banner takes the cake.

I'm still stuck in the 70's.

My national anthem will always be by Country Joe & the Fish . Their song "I Feel Like I'm Fixing to Die" was a favorite while I was in the Navy during the Vietnam war.

Uncle Frank

😊

I stand corrected Taiko666

I kind of wish that `Hallelujah` by Leonard Cohen would become the British National anthem

That is the version with all the violent biblical references

One of the versions did manage to win x-factor after all

Who? Me? Well, I'm universal. To the best of my knowledge, there's no universal anthem, so I can't respond...

I agree, Land of Hope and Glory is a better tune. It does provoke some emotion when you hear it on last night at the Proms. But the words aren't much better than God Save the Queen - very imperial
Then there's Rule Britannia, which is just as bad. All three are basically imploring us Brits to go and enslave the rest of the world in God's name,

I never actually paid attention to the lyrics of God Save the Queen let alone the meaning, but hearing it always lifted my spirit some what, however upon futher reflection due to your words I guess thats going to stop. In any case I like the Sex Pistol's version more anyway. 😊

Tradition demands I complain about the fourth verse of God Save The King/Queen, but my heart isn't in it.

hatikva is a really nice one but a little melancholy. i suppose it fits.

The US National Anthem, a poem about sh^% blowing up in a big fight set to the tune of an old bar song.

I'd say it ain't a bad set up for an anthem lol.

National Anthem vs Kings Anthem

The danish naional anthem is a beautiful song about the landscape in Denmark. The Kings anthem, which according to protocol shal be played whenever anyone from the danish royal family is around, is quite unpopular as the text is abot crushing the skulls the enemies.

This is a free translation of the danish national anthem:

There is a lovely land
with spreading, shady beeches
Near salty Baltic strand :|
Its hills and valleys gently fall,
its ancient name is Denmark,
And it is Freya's hall :|
There in the ancient days
the armoured Vikings rested
Between their bloody frays :|
Then they went forth the foe to face,
now found in stone-set barrows,
Their final resting place :|
This land is still as fair,
the sea is blue around it,
And peace is cherished there :|
Strong men and noble women still
uphold their country's honour
With faithfulness and skill :|

yeah i'm love my anthem...

I can honestly say I like my National Anthem. It's short and sweet and get's the message across. I always feel inspired after I hear it, I'm not sure why.

O Canada!
Our home and native land!
True patriot love in all thy sons command.

With glowing hearts we see thee rise,
The True North strong and free!

From far and wide,
O Canada, we stand on guard for thee.

God keep our land glorious and free!
O Canada, we stand on guard for thee.

O Canada, we stand on guard for thee.
