I practiced some mixed Karate and Aikido in the U.S. When I came here I heard stories of how most Japanese approach martial arts, esp. Karate. But after one visit to a Karate Dojo here, watching the "sensei" grumble about the students' poor performance every 20 minutes or so, and ordering laps around the dojo in Kossack dance style, I decided that both my psychological health and knees were more important and just gave up.
Moral of the story: There may be good dojo in Japan, but I think you should resign yourself to the probability you will need to do a lot of legwork to find them. But of course, if you enjoy being abused, welcome to Heaven!
