Do Japanese women make good wives?

I don't see an Americatown anywhere in Japan, and you know why that is? We can't be proud of our heritage as Americans in Japan.

There actually is an ニ但ニ陳≫?伉コ. I'm not so sure how populated it is by Americans, though and I think it is more of a shopping district. I don't think there aren't large pockets of "Americatowns" like there are Chinatowns in America because Americans can't be proud of their heritage in Japan, but simply because there aren't enough Americans. Also, if you think about America and Japan, the two are vastly different in terms of their immigration history.

As you probably already know, from very early on America attracted lots of foreigners as the land of opportunity, so there has always been a rich history of foreign nationals in America. Japan, however, closed it's doors to foreigners for awhile until Matthew Perry came along, and even then people wouldn't emigrate there because it wasn't viewed as the land of opportunity. Immigrants in America typically pooled together as a means of survival due to language barriers and racism. It's kind of ironic, because you would think if racism against Americans was rampant in Japan they would be forming these large pockets and banding together.

And for foreign populations in Japan i.e. Chinese (estimated 0.6 million) there are towns for them. For instance I remember visiting a Chinatown in Kobe. There are also Koreatowns for an estimated 1 million Koreans in Japan.

If you take into account the relatively small number of Americans in Japan, and that a portion of those are only there for a year or two on JET programs or study abroad, it's not surprising there aren't more Americatowns.

Oh okay, so nobody in Japan discriminates against foreigners? Is that what you're saying?

Oh okay, so nobody in Japan discriminates against foreigners? Is that what you're saying?

Of course not, my point was this:

The reason you don't see a bunch of Americatowns in Japan is not because Americans are oppressed to the point where they can't band together, but rather because there are too few Americans and of those that are a good portion are only temporary. Indeed, American's might not be oppressed enough to form their own towns. Surely the Chinese and Koreans are viewed much worse than Americans in Japan, given the shaky relations they have had in the past.

Japan must end the scourge of parental child abduction

HOTLINE TO NAGATACHO
Japan must end the scourge of parental child abduction
To the government of Japan:

Parental child abduction to Japan has become an epidemic that has received its share of dramatic media coverage this year, and even though many countries have long been pressuring Japan to address this issue, the demands for a solution have recently become more frequent, and noticeably more urgent.

Over the years, ambassadors from Spain, the United Kingdom, Italy, France, Canada, Australia, New Zealand and the United States have all repeatedly called upon Japan to resolve the problem of parental child abduction, but progress has been sorely lacking, resulting in the buildup of international pressure that has finally exploded onto Japan's newspapers and into policy discussions at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

In October, envoys of 11 nations plus the European Union (comprised of 27 countries) told Justice Minister Minoru Yanagida that they believe children should grow up while keeping in touch with both their parents, and that Japan should sign the Hague Convention on the Civil Aspects of International Child Abduction, which provides rules and procedures for the return of abducted children. Japan is "considering the matter."

For years, the Japanese government refused to acknowledge that parental child abduction was even a problem, but this issue has finally become too big to ignore. In September, Virginia Rep. Jim Moran warned Japan that Congress "is watching and expecting action." Now the Japanese authorities are, at long last, talking about child abduction to the media and to foreign governments, although they are unfortunately doing so in a highly guarded and disingenuous manner, often with the complicity of the Japanese press, who use "quotes" when discussing "abduction" in order to minimize the "issue."

One of Japan's favorite myths, proffered to justify parental kidnapping, is that joint custody is strictly an undesirable "Western value," and therefore Japan should not have to capitulate by adopting such a peculiar foreign practice. However, since Japan's Asian neighbors ツ― Taiwan, South Korea and China ツ― as well as other non-Western countries, such as Nigeria and countless others, recognize joint custody and also routinely enforce U.S. and other valid custody orders for joint-parenting time, this "Western value" assertion falls flat on its face.

Furthermore, loving one's children and wanting to spend time with them is most certainly not just a "Western" value.

It can be very frustrating to navigate around the Japanese facade (tatemae) of ridiculous parental child abduction excuses, but with the U.S. Congress recently condemning Japan for its complicity in the child abduction problem (by a landslide vote of 416 to 1), and with President Barack Obama's visit to Japan approaching, it seemed timely to provide a few insights.

• Excuse #1: It is Japanese culture for the father to forget about his children after a divorce.

It is presumptuous and embarrassing for the Japanese government to argue that it is "Japanese culture" to care so little about one's own flesh and blood ツ― that Japanese fathers want to have nothing to do with their kids after the breakup of a marriage. Japanese parents, fathers included, love their children immensely, and samurai warriors used to literally fight wars over the safety of their eldest sons.

The real indigenous cultural problem here is that it is a feature of Japanese culture not to openly complain about clearly unjust or irrational rules, regardless of their dire consequences. The Japanese even have a popular word for this forbearance principle: gaman.

• Excuse #2: The abducting Japanese parent should not have to submit to the whims of the "foreign" United States government.

Actually, most of the abducting parents voluntarily brought these so-called whims of the U.S. government upon themselves when they went through the process of acquiring their U.S. green cards and establishing themselves as U.S. permanent residents. So this excuse has no merit. The abductors signed documents in which they voluntarily agreed to abide by the laws of the United States, but instead they laughed in the face of the government and kidnapped the children anyway ツ― breaching divorce contracts, ignoring court orders and violating U.S. laws they had agreed to uphold.

So, this cannot be dismissed as some foreign government's unjust quest to intrude on something that is a "family matter." This is about Japanese citizens lying in courts of law, breaching contracts and violating statutes after promising not to.

Excuse #3: These women are all fleeing domestic violence.

This is an offensive, racist generalization that tries to portray all foreign males as aggressive, bullying barbarians. In fact, it is often the abductor who is the abuser, absconding with the children so that he/she can continue to exert an abnormal level of control over the kids without the inconvenience of having to deal with an ex-spouse's involvement. The United Nations Convention on Child Rights has held that parental child abduction is child abuse, and this has been corroborated by child psychology experts from many countries.

• Excuse #4: These are not really abductions. The parents are merely coming home to Japan.

Perhaps Japan was the abducting parent's original home (where the abductor grew up), but "home" for the children was the country where custody had already been decided, i.e. where the children had been living at the time of the abduction. So this "coming home" argument is specious and hypocritical.

The government tries to convey that it is justifiable for Japanese parents to "take kids home to Japan" (tsure-kaeri or tsurete-kikoku), but when a foreign parent takes the children to another country (that parent's home country), the Japanese call it kidnapping (tsure-sari) or abduction (rachi). The Japanese government and media behave duplicitously every time they pretend these unilateral relocations (relocating without permission from the other parent) are not the same thing.

Instead of describing both situations only as tsure-sari (or only as tsure-kaeri), the Japanese government cleverly (and intentionally) uses different sets of words that convey two totally different meanings depending on who the kidnapper is.

• Excuse #5: It is Japanese culture to "flee to Japan" after a divorce.

In most of these abduction cases, there were voluntary divorce contracts and court-ordered custody agreements in place at the time of the kidnapping. I do not think that all Japanese citizens would agree that it is an accepted aspect of Japanese culture to break contracts and to lie in a court of law ("No, your honor, I would never kidnap the children.").

Would Japanese corporations want to align themselves with this purported value system? Would they want to maintain that such untrustworthiness is a "Japanese" value?

Rather than defend this behavior, Japan should realize that it is bad for its international reputation to appear to condone lying, committing perjury and perpetrating fraud upon a court of law (whether the court is in the U.S., Australia, Colombia, France or any of the other countries whose envoys appealed to the Justice Ministry last month).

The Japanese government should not excuse and disregard its citizens' violations of law simply because the violations occurred in some other country. Neither is it in Japan's interest to establish the precedent that someone can sign a contract (divorce contract or otherwise) and, after collecting a substantial sum of money from the other party, flee from the contractual obligations by escaping to Japan and hiding behind the veil of "cultural differences."

10 years

I was married to a Japanese girl (now lady) for 10 years in total.
Perhaps this is a generalization but I don't trust them. In my opinion they will sleep with co-workers or bosses to keep their job (thus the numerous love hotels). They are too submissive also.
I spent most of my time in Nagano (omachi city) a total of 9 years in fact. During which my now ex-wife had 6 affairs. All admitted by herself and all respect to her for admitting. These were all with her boss and her co-worker. And all at love hotels. When you understand what can happen at a bounenkai or out of desperation for keeping your job it is very hard to trust a Japanese girl.
They have a very deceptive visard. They will seem to you that they are innocent and very kind. After years of learning JAPANESE culture you will understand that this may not be the case.
I Used to work for a large bus service in Japan ( I was in IT not driving ) and I knew of the directors relationships with female staff members. I also had a friend whom I went snow shoe walking with, she was married, yet she hinted to me that she wanted me to make an approach to her (in the form of changing all her clothes with an open door whilst I was sat in the living room just next to her room) I did explain that I don't think that it was appropriate but she continued to hint at what lifestyle she has. Very calculating.
Be careful of the signals. Girls will not say to you "I want to have Se..." with you, but they will dance around the subject.
Over all, my marriage was nice as I had tought her western ways and she eventually followed them. However, the 7th affair was too much (in the UK). So , don't dismiss their Japanese mannerisms as extinct. They will still have affairs with co-workers to keep their jobs.
If you want to date a japanese girl follow these rules:
1. Don't date a rich girl (find someone who is either unemployed or in a low pay job)
2. Don't date someone who has been with a western man previously.
3. Ensure their age - Some 15 - 16 year olds attract men and lie about their age.
4. If they seem too keen or obsessive then just walk away.
5. Ask them if they are married or have been married. Make sure they are not on the rebound.
6. Don't tell them your profession, if they love you then they will not be bothered.
7. Don't give out your surname until you are comfortable
8. Keep all private documents (such as passports) away from them. Lock your PC down and password it. (disable your CD/DVD drive to prevent password overide software)
9. Ask if she lives with her mother or parents if over 30.
Nice girls are poor, living alone, uneducated, Have only had 1 or 2 boyfriends all from japan, perhaps a 7 worker? ...
The "users" are rich, working in a high level profession, and have had multiple foreign boy friends.
However . marriage can be bliss. I would much rather date a Japanese girl who cheats on me than a fat northern UK girl who only stays faithful because nobody wants to date nelly the elephant. I had a date with a UK girl when I came back here.. she needed a large chair (wider than usual) which is embarrasing.
I will remain selebate for now. I am yet to find the right girl but I will not date a UK girl again. Japanese girls, overall, are very nice (apart from the cheating "uwaki" in japanese) The right girl is slim and modest with a strong personality. The girl I really loved after my divorce was a girl form the kansai region. She hit me and often stuck her finger up at me. She didn't have a job and lived a very simple life. She had a dog too , very cute. I found her a job in a hospital working as a receptionist. We tried to get pregnant but alas, we didn't. I came back to the UK and started worked for a government organization.

I watch a documentaries film, it explain the japanese culture separate love with sex, and the relation between husband and wife is more like a partner then a lover. It can be apply to be kind of apology or excuse to both husband and wife to mess around all over the place having an affair and cure the guilty feeling with "this is our culture, its on our system" as long as they keep their role as husband, wife, father or mother inside their house, the rest can be forgivable.

To me, its a disaster but maybe for other who do not mind his wife messing with some-one else around as long as her doing her role, its can be appear as bliss, everybody got their freedom, but i indicate love existence with jealousy, and sex its not a simple thing like eating instant noodle when you are hungry, or thing that can be barter with other thing, for me it mean a lot. But one must know that culture is not something that we carries when we were born, so we cant generalize it as "Japanese". And every culture have their own hole, I can make several example worst then this, but I wont do that, because its not necessary. Those who follow a system blindly until they fall into the hole its not a genetic issue (ex: Japanese issue). Man can follow or against the system, depend on their will.

So i think Japanese can be both good wives or bad, like Korean can be good or bad husband. It really depend on the person. Before marrying some-one, discuss serious matter with them, moral issue, ideology, etc. So you can see their real inner face. Not just their cute outlook, which will be eaten by time.

Agreed

Some things do come down to culture.
Undertstanding some of the "ways" of japanese culture can be hard to start with. The sexism and racism is the main one that got me for many years.
Eventually I submitted to them as being their culture but it bothered me in the back of my mind that women were being treated as sex objects. You only have to watch TV in japan for an hour to realize how they are viewed. They are taught to put on a voice during intercourse (high pitched) and to act dumb and "cute". This sort of society is not needed in a fully developed world and as specially not from one of the top 2 richest countries.

Damn. (Am I allowed to curse here, Thomas?) Damn. (Thanks for letting me express myself artistically) Firstly I am simply appalled--in a way--that this old, dead-horse-whipped thread would have had any life in it at all. (see; post number 18, p 1 ) Then, I am about as flabbergasted with the complaint and obvious failure to see the 'Don't feed the generalization hungry animals' sign, as I am with the internal contradictions and pretty much outright lies that I find in some of the posts above.

Anyway, I do feel for the reality of whatever 'hurt' there may be (regardless of the source--internal factor {as in only in one's head} or external factor {objective observation of universal facts}), and only wish to suggest that maybe this David Shade character's program might be something to check out . . . maybe? (I mean, if the high libido gets what the operative objective of that state is, then statisfaction is fairly secured)

OH...in a preview post of this, I see Dave has posted something...a sign? anyway...I'll wander back to my stomping grounds and leave this dead-horse-beaten thread to its own desire. Wow...just surpized as halen when that title caught my eye after opening up this main page. Wow !!

I do not doubt your experiences but this is totally an over generalization. Reasonably speaking you were just unlucky, and I am sure there are other issues to indicate why you make these generalizations, and while having not lived in Japan as long as you (only 6 years), I know these things you say about ALL Japanese women who have a job, to be untrue. I have met and "befriended" the type you are talking about, but they stunk of that crap a mile away, and I knew there was no point in pursuing anything meaningful. So while I am sorry for what happened to you, you should not be so quick to generalize with this kind of advice.

which part of my post that you consider to be generalizing? doesnt i tell you its cultural issue and dont make it as people in general? and further i conclude dont generalize japanese because they can be appear as good or bad wife as korean can be appear as good or bad husband depend on personality?

I think your earlier prejudice making you fail to understand my point, i even doubt you read all my post.

And i dont like your tones, you better reply this and explain Frustrated Dave.

abdalrasyid> my guess is that Dave is basically referring to this part of your post. "I watch a documentaries film, it explain the japanese culture separate love with sex, and the relation between husband and wife is more like a partner then a lover."

He probably feels... as I do.. that this is untrue. It happens.. but it is in fact a generalization.

Are you kidding? You start your post with , "I watch a documentaries film" and that is your basis for the following explanation on what marriage is like here in Japan. That is where you are generalizing in regards to this topic.

If you think that what you explained above as a cultural issue, then obviously the documentary is wrong or you misunderstood it. I am not even going to talk the how wrong you are about what you said about keeping the husband and wife image up and everything else is forgiven.

Im talking about the culture Chido, culture is not something organic, as im also get it from the documentaries and im not post it here to be an axioma or absolute truth or solid argument, but as opinion that being share and i hope there will be another refrence explaining in more detail about japanese understanding on love, let it be base from philosophy, work of art, folklore, as im here for sharing my thought and get verification from other and enrich my refrence. And again if you feel being generalize, im not talking about the japanese peoples there, im talking about idea that being construct by society system, include there power.
I think it can be interesting topic to discuss, or hot debate to fight, depend on how mature we re-act to it.
But i found your respond fair, so tell me where do i get it wrong?

Im not mis-understood the meaning of the documentaries. It follow up with an example of japanese female tell he several time sold her body to customer which usualy old man, and she add, she have a boyfriend, and soon if she get married she will keep the job to suport her house etc. And the comentary said, its not something immoral, it just the different view on how we seeing sex and related it with love. And i catch it as an apology. But further i dont take it as a majority japanese ideology and make generalization.

Further, im here not post an axioma or thesis or solid argument, that is why you can post something below me so you can add or corect something if you found it wrong, no one expert in japanese culture here, all of us learning, dont need to call peoples stupid because you seem not agreeing on their refrence why dont just simply verify it, as im so open with it and that is why im here on JREF.

That is why maturity is needed if we attend to forum, to react accordingly to other different and gladly share and correct mis-perception. That is why human can talk, because they need to fullfied their need, they need to ask something they dont know, and to share something that they unsure about it, if we already sufficient on anything, also on opinion, there no need discussion room, im event dont need to talk to you here and we dont need to share opinion.

Behave Frustrated Dave.

So the above quote in bold is the norm for Japan is it? You have just lumped your assumptions that the majority of Japanese women are like this girl you speak of. What you are presenting here is a very , very small number in the population of Japan, hense your generalizations that Japanese women don't care for monogamy, when the reality is quite the opposite.

I could interview a 100 women in Indonesia in a red light district then make a statement that the majority of Indonesian women sell their body, it seems to be a cultural thing. Sure it may be the norm for those women, but not the norm for most of the population which I have conveniently not interviewed which stacks the percentages in favour of women selling their body. Do you see where I am going with this? You can't make a judgement on incomplete data which you seem to be presenting. And you are not going to tell me that their are no prostitutes in Indonesia are you?

Have you even been to Japan and actually experienced Japanese culture? I would reckon the closest you been to Japan is what you have seen on TV...

I would reckon the closest you been to Japan is what you have seen on TV...

do you read the whole sentence Dave? you point me as i take those sample to generalize the population where do you get that idea? i re-quote it.

Cant you read the latest sentence? or you just dont want to read it? because its only proove your wrong and its hard to admit a mistake? i will rewrite it to make it more clear, maybe your to lazy to read the whole post :

But further i dont take it as a majority japanese ideology and make generalization

didnt i said this to you?

But one must know that culture is not something that we carries when we were born, so we cant generalize it as "Japanese".

things are clear, im againts generalization on japanese population, im talking about the culture. If im at your shoes, i even ashame to thrown such argument just to make me look right while im not.
You can keep dreaming about me having generalization on Japanese population, but if you read my sentence and being objective you find im not indeed it make you awake from your dream. Read my conclution :

So i think Japanese can be both good wives or bad, like Korean can be good or bad husband. It really depend on the person

And you can keep searching any hole and weakness on my sentence seeking for a mistake try to twisting words and seperating content to make it look as generalization, while its already clear, im againts generalization. If there are any crime in science, let it be generalization.
Be fair.

An add to make it clear

first the sample i show you above its not for picturing a solid example for concluding the generalization that i made in your dream, it is for your information that im not mis-understood the point of the documentaries. Again you show me your lack of understanding of my point and words, im concentrating answering your asumption that i understand the documentaries very well and you treat my answer as my proove to making a generalization which is way to far from the context, its your own made up things. And its not my data, or my assesment, its the BBC documentaries. Yeah i found it (by googling) the documentaries i watch was BBC "Sex in Japan", and the one who said "sex are seperate with love in japanese culture" as i remember was a japanese as im watch it a pretty long time ago and i dont have a copy of it as it contain many explitic motion picture. Also it have interview with Araki a famous japanese photographer.

WOW! So your saying my wife MUST be whoring around on me behind my back because thats her culture?

Are you serious? So because you watched a BBC documentary now you think all Japanese women are slutting around? Well then I guess I can say all Indonesian women are ****** for sale because I visited your country and there were women on the streets selling themselves to American sailors.
That is the type of culture stereotyping you are promoting.

People who make "documentary" films like that are in the entertainment buisness and there fore need to make their film successful, otherwise they wouldn't be able to sell it to broadcasters like BBC.

So now I will make a point to you, DO NOT start spewing forth information like you're some great know-it-all and then use a statement like "But further i dont take it as a majority japanese ideology and make generalization" to try and buffer your previous statements. That is called back peddling, look up the meaning if you don't already know it.

If I was to quote an article on extremist muslims and make opinionated statements in my comments but I ended it with stating "but I don't think all islamics/muslims are bad" there would be a fire storm of hate and discontent thrown my way.

Maybe you do not have the greatest grasp of the English language but I would hope that if you are going to comment in an English speaking forum that you would know that even we have subtle nuances to our language that can easily offend the average reader. It seems to me there are a lot of people on this forum that either don't give a damn if they offend or truly don't realize that they are being offensive.

Lastly look up the word culture, it clearly states it has to do with people: Culture; Anthropology . the sum total of ways of living built up by a group of human beings and transmitted from one generation to another.

*Just to be clear I do not believe that Indonesian women are prostitutes nor do I think islamics are terrorists*

Referring to the post earlier about japanese wives needing to sleep with their boss to keep their job, I of course don't believe that represents most japanese women and I understand that's probably a incorrect generalization (i know ツ坂?「ツ人 gets generalized a lot too).

However, I have a question, why is this a VERY common theme in japanese dramas? It seems there is always at least one ツ鞘?披?堙固スq窶堙娯?ーテッナステ斥?オ that is sleeping her way into jobs and her friends/other office works don't think anything of it like it's the norm. In fact, isn't home wrecker a common term in japanese?

Are you kidding, basing reality on a drama? I suppose cops shooting up cars and mass destruction of property is a realistic view of America, b/c it happens in the movies? And hollywood does not not use the same themes as well. Open your eyes, I could name dozens of movies ,TV dramas where this happen on US TV.

My wife isn't a **** either, Navy Guy. The guy who claimed Japanese women sleep around at work just happened to have a J-wife who liked screwing around. Or else we're to believe that seven different bosses threatened to fire her unless she submitted.

More likely, she sent the right signals, they made their pass, and the deal was closed.

Incidentally, sleeping with your boss at work is a better way to lose your job than get a promotion. One way or another, the affair breaks up, and boss finds you embarrassing to keep around.

I think a better question than "Do Japanese woman make good wives?" would be "Do women make good wives?" It's ridiculous and offensive to assume that because they're all Japanese women, they're basically the same. That's like saying all UK girls are fa... oh wait, somebody already did that in this thread. Why is this offensive thing even still in existence?

All Japanese women are going to cheat/be submissive and idyllic, just like all red-heads with green eyes are CLEARLY witches with awful tempers, all blondes are OBVIOUSLY complete morons, and all black people are BLATANTLY involved in gang violence.

By the by, do Japanese men make good husbands? Since we've established that they're all basically the same person anyway...
