Statistics are nothing more than the gathering of numbers, the collation of those numbers, the interpretation of the numbers and then the choice of how you use those numbers.
All of the above are primarily controlled by people .... who as you say, tell lies!
You seem to be genuinely interested in statistics ... there is an excellent programme on BBC Radio 4 called More or Less which gives an informed and entertaining view on the the world of numbers.
