This summer, while we are all waiting to see young Kirk and Spock in Star Trek XI, another movie, based on Japanese anime, will find it's way to your favorite movie theater.

Goemon

Okay, this will be coming to a theater near you, only if you live in Japan...apologies to those living elsewhere.

This movie looks a LOT like Casshern, only the setting seems different. And Casshern was ultimately ambiguous and depressing. I dunno if I wanna see this...eh, who am I kidding, I know I'm gonna see it.☝

Younha

A Koraen singer I know little about is starring in a movie that will debut this weekend in Japn. So BoA is getting competition from her own country? Watch out, BoA! Naah, there's plenty room for both of them. Here's Younha's PV of the movie's theme song.

Blood the Last Vampire

Another Hollywood remake of a Japanese film-- this time starring a Korean actress as the heroine and Koyuki, from the Last Samurai , as a villain.

The Legend of Kamui

A ninja movie based on the manga/anime, Kamui Gaiden, will be released in Japan this September. Don't know about any international release.

Koyuki is in this film, too--busy lady--, and some news guys were making a fuss about the relationship between her (32 y.o.) and her 24 y.o. co-star.

This is already playing in my neighborhood theater, but maybe not in yours. The previous vid I posted above was rendered n/a, so this is a 2nd and maybe better post.

And this is the anime it was based on.

Hachiko: A Dog's Story

Sorry, I don't have anything more exciting to share with you, but coming in August is the Americanized version of the true story of Hachiko, a dog who faithfully waited for his master to come home for years even after his master had died.
(You know the statue of a dog next to Shibuya station --that's Hachiko's statue.)

Nodame Cantible - The Movie

A movie of the uber-popular comedy drama based on a manga about a group of classical music students is currently being produced. It's due out next year. However, I don't think it'll have international distribution so you may need to wait for the dvd or othe media.

The movie's opening on Dec. 12 in Japan. I hope something new has been added to the storyline because much as I liked the series, this trailer is underwhelming. And we'll have to wait for a concluding movie Part 2 in spring 2010.

Interesting thread you have here. Goemon looks very visually appealing, I'll have to check it out sometime.

I finally watched the movie this weekend and can give it a strong recommendation. The storyline and the acting are surprisingly good - not the usual pop/fluff of cg rendered fantasy movies. The movie is a masterful melding of the legends of Goemon-master thief, Hattori Hanzo-master Ninja, Lady Cha Cha, and the stories of Nobunaga, Hideyoshi, and Tokugawa. Well worth renting, I should have seen it at a theater. Worth watching twice!

The Karate Kid - Remake

Do you remember The Karate Kid? Just want to let you know that it's been remade and will be out this summer, but NOT in Japan (what :?). However, this time instead of karate, it will be kung fu, and instead of Mr. Miyagi, it will be Mr. Han (Jackie Chan). Looks interesting.
