Christmas in Japan

samuraitora: perhaps it is a sight to see, assuming it doesn't get fogged up or clouded...but I don't care to struggle through traffic just to see it...it's the same sun rising no matter what day of the year it is.... :P

I suppose it's better than choking on mochi on the first day... :D
 
There is a uplifting aspect to seeing the first sunrise of the new year. It gives me a feeling of hope and inspiration. This feeling is only facilitated because I want to feel it, but still. I have been taking a much more zen look at things since I had the boy and nature is a big part of His and My life. He is looking forward to seeing it with me this year.

I was told in the last email that i recieved from my friend in japan at the minute that they dont really recognise it as a christian holiday.. its mainly commercial.

She said that in there is a shop somewhere in kukura with a Santa Claus on a Crusafix!!! :D :D .....not sure if thats quite correct.. ;)

Im at the minute hoping to go over to visit in the new year...i hear that its wicked in japan at the new year. 😄

Unfortunately, we in the states are leaning more towards recognizing it as a commercial holiday too. That is just what many of the people I talk to say. The stores are putting up Christmas stuff even before Thanksgiving gets here. Am I the only one this troubles?
 
Nope. Its been troubling me that like you say they have been putting christmas stuff in stores earlier this year. They started the christmas adverts and even christmas late night shopping here where i live in the UK even before it was December. It just makes it seem wrong to me. . .I mean, im not religous about christmas but this year it seems completely ott. . .

My friend in japan said for chrismas he is going to Good Charlotte's concert. It's true they have started decorating earlier. Maybe its just to get it over with and start shopping early to beat the crowds.
 
I really like Xmas in Japan actually .
Its not half as commercial as it is in the USA ,and I dont have to hear Brintey Spears verisons of white xmas or what have you every 2 seconds.
News Years is kind of a drag if you do not have alot of friends or family there tho .
everything closes ,and people do family stuff ~
I was rather lonely, and shopping was no fun .
 
I know there are Christians in Japan, but does anyone know how they celebrate Christmas in Japan (I'd imagine just like any other country)? Anything different in their celebrations? What is the correct Japanese translation for "Merry Christmas?"
 
Most people dont celebrate it.
Xmas in Japan seems to be a much more marketed consumerist event than the west, if thats possible. Sales, toys etc.

Its also regarded as a couples day. Spend time with your girlfriend and hit a love hotel.

I have a few options that day but I think it will be alcohol soaked loneliness that wins.

Well hows it going?

I am and Irish guy travelling to Japan (backpacking) from the end of December until end of January. I would like to make contact with someone who is in Japan and who could give me some tips on the best routes to take along the way. I'm on a tight budget so any cost saving tips would be the business. I'm in the process of getting the railpass for travelling because I've been told that is a cost saving ticket to get.

All advice welcome.

Tokyo Millenario at Marunouchi area near Tokyo staion is a must to see in the end of this month, though tons of peope are there.
 
Hi,
New here. Got a question about Christmas in Tokyo. I'm thinking about visiting Tokyo December 24. That's a Sunday, Christmas Eve. How is Tokyo on Christmas Eve? Are all the shops/restaurants closed? Are people just at home celebrating with family? Will Monday, December 25 also be dead? Is it a bad idea to be in Tokyo on the 24th and 25th? I only have a couple of days to visit...is it worth it?

The 23rd is a public holiday (Emporers Birthday), 24th and 25th will probably be business as usual (Christmas NOT being a public holiday in Japan and all).

Might be a few places closed, but nothing too inconvenient.
 
last year nothing in my area was closed on christmas. New years however, the whole place was shut down.
