Ever had any doubts about what your gender really is? Doubt no more: The Gender Genie will predict your gender (and claims to be 80% accurate about it, too). :-)

You have to submit a short text and The Gender Genie will try to predict whether you're male or female. I submitted this short text

Original: We drove slowly across the plain. There was nothing to be seen. No houses, no streetlights, no people. It was wonderul - finally everything made sense. The peace was so profound we couldn't help but wonder from where it had all come. It was as if it had suddenly jumped out somewhere and insisted on not going away no matter how hard we tried. But we didn't want it to go away... Oh, no. We would enjoy it. We rode across the plain. Slowly and steadily we made our way towards the unknown. It was quiet. There was no birdsong, no wind, no one said anything. We could almost feel the silence. It was as if it weighed heavily on our shoulders like an unmovable burdain no one had asked to carry. We started looking about ourselves - shifty glances shot at every possible direction. We tried to shake it away, we tried. We waved our arms, hit it, shouted. The air was filled with noise, heavy with anxiety. And then it was suddenly silent again... No one moved. The ground was stained red and the birds flew closer for their daily feed. The peace was so profound you'd wonder from where it had all come.

and the genie quite accurately predicted that I'm female 😊 It was quite interesting to see what kind of key words were listed as male and female and how they were distributed in the text.

Interesting. It got mine right. But "the" is a male word? The results said that it's wrong 41% of the time, which isn't all that good considering it would be 50% if it just guessed at random with only two choices.

Maybe it's based on the idea that men would use 'the' more often to show cause and effect... :? Still seems a bit off, though...

I don't need a test like that.

... Last time I looked at myself .... I seemed to be male!

(....Last time the wife looked at me ... she just laughed!)

....what the heck! Perhaps I should take the test ... ?

ニ淡ニ停?。ニ停?

I have copied and pasted a few of my own articles. Here is what I got :

1) Marriage in Japan and in the West :

Female Score: 2253
Male Score: 2236

2) Meiji : a cultural revolution

Female Score: 311
Male Score: 297

3) Sino-Japanese relations

Female Score: 1911
Male Score: 3070

4) Foreign criminality in Japan

Female Score: 997
Male Score: 2200

5) Japan more accommodating to English speakers than to speakers of other languages

Female Score: 1300
Male Score: 1762

6) Kyoto Guide (intro page)

Female Score: 242
Male Score: 635

7) Education in Japan

Female Score: 358
Male Score: 1082

8) Temples & Shrines

Female Score: 792
Male Score: 1688

Words like "around, what, who, more, are" and my beloved "as" all get high masculinity scores.

8) Japanese-English

Female Score: 632
Male Score: 758

So apart from 2 ties (slightly more feminine), all the tested articles are more masculine. It seems that the topic matters little.

Words like "with, if, not, where, be, when, your" get high feminity scores.

So why is that that "where and when" are feminine while "who and what" are masculine ?

I wonder if my style changes a lot when I write on the forum (adressing other people) rather than articles for an audience.

For example, I got the most masculine score for the article about "education". But checking another thread in the forum about "education", I got the most feminine score so far :

Female Score: 1203
Male Score: 1140

Words: 137
(NOTE: The genie works best on texts of more than 500 words.)

Female Score: 80
Male Score: 203

Based of my post here...Miss-shiftings

I pasted a few of my posts from Christianity Conceptions, my favourite thread, one after another to get the count over 500 words. Here are the results:

Words: 589

(NOTE: The genie works best on texts of more than 500 words.)

Female Score: 691
Male Score: 1395

The Gender Genie thinks the author of this passage is: male!

Female Score: 128
Male Score: 494

The Gender Genie thinks the author of this passage is: male!

Hmm...the scores are pretty close there. I have to change my speech. EEk.

Words: 247
(NOTE: The genie works best on texts of more than 500 words.)

Female Score: 124
Male Score: 557

The Gender Genie thinks the author of this passage is: male!

I guess it is pretty accurate, well, then again, it was a short story about a friggin DRAGON!!! :D :D :D :D :D
I can see how this would work, judging on how males tend to speak more of actions than emotions, more of the here than of the then.

OMG... my text got:
Female Score: 967
Male Score: 1578

:o
No wonder loads of people seem to mistake me for a bloke online!
The text was 859 words, and was a post that I've made on the forum under "popularity of J-rock in the Western world: up to us or them?"
