Are there synonyms in Japanese?

Basically my whole question is in the thread name.

Like, for example, english has "big", "large", "collasal", "enormous", etc. All of them basically mean big. I was wondering if Japanese has many different words that can be used to sound better. :?

Of course, yes. You can get some words of similar, but slightly different meaning from 類語辞書.
