I was at the pet shop yesterday (we treat it like a zoo) and they had the most gorgeous rats. One of them came right forward and stared into my eyes for ages. There was such intelligence there. I would love to get a couple of rats, but we don't have room for a big cage. Plus my mum is scared of them. Simon says that's a good reason to get them, then she won't visit so often!
Anyway, as always 11/10 for your cute, bemused-looking snail.

I love Iris, she deserves 100/100. Pet shops really are great arent they!
A friend of mine in NZ loves animals so much, she has a forensic science degree, but opted instead to work for a Large Pet shop in NZ. I would spend hours in there, and was allowed to play with the kitties and the puppies. I left the ratties be though.
When it was a public holiday, or any old time really, she would bring puppies home, so they wouldnt be lonely overnight in the shop.
I was against little doggies in handbags, but when they havent yet been onnoculated they sure look cute in my Louis Vuitton
Unfortunately I would get attached to them, and would name them, and then when they would get sold, I would be rather upset.

Ooh Horizon, Im so sorry that pet shops in your area treat animals so badly. Even though I hate rats, I could never bring myself to set traps or anything.
I once saw a rodent friendly trap where you would put Peanut Butter in one end, the rodent would crawl through and get trapped, but not hurt in anyway, only his pride was hurt, then you could carry the trap out and set them free, full and happy to be back in the pasture.
In NZ they are very against animal cruelty. Even if a bird is stunned, you can call SPCA or Animal Welfare and they will come and collect it to nourish it and bring it back to its original state before letting it free.
Pet shops get shut down if there is any sort of maltreatment, and if you think that your neighbour or anyone, even somebody who has left their animal in the car or mistreated an animal, you can call a number and somebody will rescue the animal and set a hefty fine on the nasty man/woman.
I grew up on a farm, where duck shooting was a yearly novelty. I hated it, and would just cry and cry, then my grandfather would try to get me to pluck the ducks, and I would run away. Took a wee while to find me, I wasnt in a hurry to go back.
Anyway back to the topic...

'Tis not in my area. If it was, I'd be doing something about it most definately.
And I know you can call as well. Hell, I complained about this one field where horses were that barely had any shade at all, but, apparently, a few tiny spotches of shadow where a single horse could barely stand in is fine for multiple horse...-grumbles-
Also, I doubt it would be a hefty fine. I was watching this documentary that linked animal abuse to possible future violence against people ('cause, you know, you only need to get caring about animal abuse when there's a connection between that and animal abusers hurting humans as well) and there was this one group of teenagers who taped themselves shooting at a dog and then walking over to her when they got bored with just shooting her. They then picked her up by the throat, threw her in a bag, and burnt her to death. The ring-leader got, like, 18 months, if that, and, like, $1000 fine, if that.
Animal abusers barely get a slap on the wrist...
And...You...Hate rats...?
