Hi,
I have just found this post releated to keigo in a forum so I thought I'd try to read it:


ところで。。
私は敬語について修論をするつもりなので、敬語に関する本を教えていただきたいんですが。。
よろしくお願いいたします。

I looked for some words:

修論 (shouron) master thesis
tsuite / about,regarding
nanode / because
tsumori / plan, intention
nikansuru / related to

Did I get the romanization right?

I have some doubts with: 教えていただきたいんですが

With ーてform + いただく, you are (in humble form), receiving a favour from someone. (In this case, teaching/instruction/information being given by someone else).

ーたい form + んですが is a polite way of asking for assistance.
博物館に行きたいんですが… ("I'd like to go to the museum...") is really a way of asking for directions.

So the combination, 教えていただきたいんですが is really just a roundabout way of saying 教えてください

note: お願いいたします is onegaiitashimasu, not onegaishimasu (same meaning, different politeness level).

ok, so I'd like to focus more on the the meaning of ~たい form + んですが

You said it is used as a polite way of asking for assistance, now I wonder if the ~taindesu construction sort of implies some feelings of desire, for instance:

私は東京に行きたいんですが

Can I use it to say: "I'd like to go to Tokyo! (desire)" ??

The ーたい form by itself says what you want.
東京に行きたいです。 = I want to go to Tokyo.

のですが・んですが adds a sort of "but..." to it. So if you were going to ask about how you get to Tokyo (driving directions from where you are, or which is the cheapest method of travel, or where you should go to buy tickets), then you might use this form, for example, at a ticket office/travel agent:
東京に行きたいんですが...
