Hi,

1. Person A has borrowed person B's class notes and praised B's handwriting. A politely demurs. Then B says:

お世辞抜きで、すごい上手だよ~。いいよね~。履歴書 とか書く時。

I am not very clear about the last sentence. Could it mean something like "Your writing is so neat, it's as if you were writing your CV or something"?

2. 1でした自分達のロールプレイを2つほどテープに録音して、・・・

My translation: "Record your own role-play (conversations) from (exercise) 1 onto tape..."

What does 2つほど mean?

3. せっかくの機会だからと、子供は現地の学校に通わせる ことにしたものの、行く前は、英語が一言も話せない子 供の教育のことでいろいろ心配していました。

My translation: "It was a long-awaited opportunity, and we had arranged for the children to attend a local school, but I had worries about the children's education as they were unable to speak a word of English before we left [Japan]."

a) What does からと mean? I assume it is から + と, but I do not get exactly what that combination produces.

b) I do not exactly understand the の after もの. Does it give a kind of explanatory feel perhaps?

4. 私は、「学校では、ちゃんとやれているのかしら」と内 心、恐る恐る出かけて行きました。

What does the part in quotes mean?

5. A teacher is talking to a parent about a child's progress in class:

・・・この間も真っ先に手を挙げて歌いました。

a) I understand 手を挙げて means the child raised his hand, but what about 歌いました? Surely it doesn't mean he sang? Could it mean he shouted out, eager to answer?

b) Also, does 真っ先に mean that the child raised his hand for the first time (i.e. he had never raised it before)? (As opposed to being the first child in the class to raise his hand to answer that specific question.)

1)
いいよね~。履歴書 とか書く時。 = 履歴書とか書く時(に)いいよね~ 。

2)
two or three

3)
行く前は modifies 心配していました, not 話せない.

a)
Yes, that's から + と.

せっかくの機会だからそれ(= 機会)を利用しよう/それを生かそうと

b)
ものの is an adversative conjunction particle. You can think it けれど.

4)
I wonder they(= my children) can be doing well in school.

5) a)
He raised his hand when the teacher asked his/her(= the teacher's) students to sing(in a music class, for instance).

b)
The one in the second parentheses is correct.

Thanks Toritoribe.

3b. Out of interest, is this ものの etymologically related to もの + の, or is it something different altogether?

4. So, やれて is potential form of やる (=遣る), right?

3) b)
Yes, that's from "もの + の".

形式名詞「もの」+格助詞「の」から
ものの - goo辞書

4)
Exactly. The kanji 遣る is used only for "to dispatch/send (a person somewhere for a purpose)", though.
