Hi,
I believe this means "...was much hated".
Is 大そう from 大い ("much") + そう ("appears like")?
I believe this should mean "When John was born, there was the same excitement."
I'm unsure about させられました. My first thought was that it was する passive-causative, but wouldn't that mean "was made to do something"? I don't understand who was made to do what, and by whom.
I understand this is something to do with being a model of good manners, but I don't get the phrase How does that work?
I understand this is something to do with walking calmly, but what does はらって mean? I assumed it was from 払う, but none of the meanings seem to apply.
