Hi,

1. 「おんや！」叔母さんが一言吠えた。「おまえ、まだこ こにいたのかい？」
「はい」ハリーが答えた。
「なんだい、その『はい』は。 ....... 」

a) Is おんや a contraction of something?

b) Just to remind me (as I think I have had similar questions before), why まだここにいたのかい and not まだここにいるのかい? (The intended meaning is clearly "Are you still here", i.e. here now.)

c) Is なんだい = 何 + だい (marking question)?


2. 「学校でおまえに礼儀のひとつも叩き込んでくりゃいい ものを」

Is there an implied verb at the end? Which verb? I would guess something like "hope", but the meaning of "hope" seems already incorporated in いい, so I don't really see why it would be necessary.


3. 「ひっぱたかれて当然の子を叩かないなんて、腰抜け、 腑抜け、間抜けもいいとこだ。」

This sentence has defeated me. What is the literal translation? (As literal a translation as possible, even if it is not the most natural English, would help me most.)


4. 「そりゃあ」ハリーが受けた。「なーんども」

What is the meaning of 受けた in this case? In the context, something like 答えた, or just 言った, would be expected.


5. 案ずるより産むが易し

I understand this is a set expression, but is 産むが易し grammatical in ordinary Japanese?

The past form shows you are not supposed to be here (nevertheless, why you are here now?), whereas the present form can mean "Are you going to keep staying here?"

2) Sorry, I don't get it. Does そう mean 礼儀のひとつも叩き込んでくれる? Does なぜそうしないんだろう mean "Why wouldn't you/one do it?"? I can't understand how を connects that to the first part of the sentence.

3) I think it is もいいとこだ that confuses me most here. How can this mean "You are real ... "?

2)～ものを is an adversative conjunction, similar to ～のに.

e.g.
あいつはばかもいいところだ。
