あたし

I heard a japanese song, ad it said atashi wa (something) i forgot what it said but at the time i thought i understood it, except, I haven't heard atashi before, and it is where 私 should of been, is it like an alternate version of 私 or something? either that or they pronounced the wa as an a or.
