News ‘Oppenheimer’ premieres in Japan

The film "Oppenheimer" recently had its premiere in Japan, a nation that still bears the scars of the nuclear weapons dropped 79 years ago. These weapons were invented by the American scientist J. Robert Oppenheimer, who is often referred to as "the father of the atomic bomb" due to his leadership in the Manhattan Project. Japanese filmgoers' reactions to the movie were mixed and deeply emotional. Among them is Toshiyuki Mimaki, a survivor of the Hiroshima bombing when he was just 3 years old. Mimaki expressed his fascination with Oppenheimer's story and the weight of the historical events. In a telephone interview with The Associated Press, he pondered the Japanese decision to attack Pearl Harbor, a move that ultimately led to war they could never hope to win. As the chairperson of the Japan Confederation of A- and H-Bomb Sufferers Organization, Mimaki attended a preview screening of "Oppenheimer." However, despite his anticipation, the movie did not depict the Hiroshima bombing scene he had been waiting for. The absence of that pivotal moment left a profound impact on him.

I haven't seen the movie, but I heard it's the bo- oooo, too soon... no all jokes aside, it's a good movie; it's just long... I think it's interesting that Japan is premiering the movie! I was shocked!

There's been a lot of criticism here in Japan for the lack of depicting the suffering of Hiroshima and Nagasaki, but honestly, this is not what the movie is about. And many of those oh-so-critical seem to conveniently ignore the history that led up to the fateful events of August 1945.
