We haven't had a typhoon directly hit the main island of Okinawa in nearly 3 years, been brushed a few times, nothing major. This one looks, well so far anyway, to be the real deal.

I'm going to have a 4 day weekend....yahoo!


However I must temper my glee with sincere hopes that the people in Kyushu and mainland are safe from this storm. Kyushu has gotten a ton of rain lately and with the ground being so swollen a typhoon of this size has the potential to cause some serious damage there.

Be safe folks and prepare.

Looks like it's headed my way after you, buddy. But in all likelihood our staff will have a workday even if the kids don't come in.
 
Exactly...this will be nothing for us...but I am sorry for those poor people in Kyushu! Not to mention, I am supposed to be in Kyushu in 2 weeks!

Kyushu has already had serious damage caused just from the rain...if/when this typhoon hits, it is going to be a royal mess up there!

I think this could be a conspiracy!:giggle: Joking aside, I hope the typhoon doesn't hit any country and that everyone is safe and prepared...just in case!
 
Yeah there goes my weekend... I was planning to fire off some crackers near the Akashi Kaikyo bridge in the weekend together with my wife to celebrate summer time... aaa I guess a beer and some card games with the family are great as well.

Be save for all the people that will be in the big one... I don't think it will be very dangerous when it hits the kansai region.
 
It is building in strength as it hits the warmer waters around Okinawa, this could end up as Category 4 storm.

I didn't know that a typhoon is approaching! It looks like a big one.
I hope it won't be so severe and everyone will be alright.
 
Update here....Looks like it is going to start getting a wee bit foul around these parts starting this evening and through to Sat.

Batten down the hatches folks, keep your powder dry.

I hope it's not too strong when it hits land. We have hurricanes in the Atlantic like this, and when they hit Florida as a Category 3 or 4 they can do some damage. We had a lot of damage and power outages in Virginia a few years ago with Hurricane Isabelle, even 100 miles inland.
 
I never like it when a storm gathers in force and gets stronger. According to the US Navy/Air Force typhoon warning center Typhoon 'Man-Yi' could strike land at this point - 34.4 N 137.6 E.

I hope there is no major urban development in that area!
 
Actually it really doesnt matter where it hits land. The right side of the typhoon has the stronger winds and monsoon like rains. I have actually seen rain that was blown at a 90 degree angle because of the wind.
 
Well I spent my morning tieing down the house...then spent my evening doing the same at work!
 
He he he....I spent the night, or will spend the night tieing down my wife, it is a fact that there is a small blip in the birth statistics 10 months or so after a major storm like this one.

Joking aside this storm is being reported in the local news as having the same strength and power as the one that literally blew over steel rod reinforced concrete telephone poles on Ishigaki and Miyako Islands a year or 2 ago.

The refrig is full of beer, and food for the kids, got plenty of water, hey I have a 4 day weekend now. Whoo Hoo, time to break out the board games and have some family wink, wink, fun, ok ok, first the board games put the kids to bed, then...wink wink😍:sing::smoke::win:.

It means people get knocked up during typhoon season and he's getting laid tonight! (unlike some of us!) But...this storm will help pay for my trip to Kyushu in a few weeks!
 
Yeah, that's what I thought he meant. Too bad typhoons are no help to me in that department....
 
If this was a a different thread I would be tempted to ban you, however, to those that havent experienced a typhoon or hurricane of this size it is easy to get nervous and worry about what will happen.

Like I wrote before because the houses here are steel reinforced concrete with concrete walls surround many if not most of the houses, the biggest worry will be if the electricity goes out or not. Otherwise it is just a noisy, windy rainy day off.
 
Any update on the typhoon? I heard today that it was headed for Okinawa.
 
According to the Japan Meteorological Service its position at 06:00 JST is 25.5 N 127.4 E, with winds gusting upto 135 Knots.

From what I can see they reckon its going to pass over the southern tip of the islands and slowly head up north to the mainland.
 
Yeah we got hit, this morning from about 5AM until a little bit ago we lost power. It was pretty nasty there for a bit but the worst is past and now heading towards mainland please be safe people the top wind speed was roughly 135mph or 60m/s.

We're fine now......be safe.
 
I saw video of the typhoon and it's winds and rain....very scary. I am glad to hear you are ok Obeika!
 
Thank you, actually it was a rather quiet day, played some games with my kids. Couldnt do much because of the wind and rain, but it was actually pleasant around the house.

I truly pray that the people in Kyushyu will be ok as they are expecting somewhere in the neighborhood of 800mm of rain tomorrow, on top of all the rain they had earlier. There is much more damage from typhoons in mainland than here in Okinawa, partly because of the type of ground structure that is there. Lots of landslides and flooding.

We have been in the "bofu" or 25m/s winds for over 20hours now and expect to get out of it sometime around 3AM tomorrow the 14th.

Haven't heard from DoctorP yet today, hope he is doing ok.
 
We should be getting the typhoon sometime tomorrow or Sunday. The only thing I really don't like about it is the rain perpendicular to the ground, as alluded to before. I usually have the narrow top part of my patio windows open, but I won't be able to when the typhoon hits!

Glad to hear that you're doing alright, Obeika! I hope DrP's doing well also!
