MEXT Scholarship 2016 (Research)

Congrats again to all of you who have received the placement result.

This is kind of repeated post but for those of you who are new to this, we have actually compiled a list of members going to Japan in 2016, where we are from and where we are going.

It would be nice if you would fill in the form, you might be able to know your uni mate even before departing ;)

If you haven't yet, please fill in this form. You might make some friends even before you land in Japan. ;)

Dear all,
I hope you are doing well,
Have any of you received their flights reservations dates from their Embassy?

Here in our country we received a brief information regarding the possible date of departure, we could be leaving to Japan on April 2nd 2016 and arrive there around April 3rd - 4th 2016, they still have to yet confirm our itinerary, but it's good to have an idea of when are we leaving.

If there's any other information from our Embassy I'll share it here.

I've applied for visa, but have yet received any flight details from the embassy.
My uni did tell me that I'm only allowed to move into dorm on weekdays (unless I'm willing to pay for hotel myself for weekend stay), and I have to arrive before Apr 5, so I guess I'll be either arriving on Apr 1 (Fri) or Apr 4 (Mon).

I have a similar situation. The first night I will stay at a hotel because my flight arrives late and I can only do check-in at my residence during business hour.

I have finally received my flight details. I'm leaving on the 3rd and arriving late in the evening on the 4th. Since the international house office hours are 9:00 - 18:00, I'm gonna need to spend my first night at a hotel. If there's any other people with the same problem, I suggest you start booking your hotel soon. I could barely find a decent deal ...

I could barely find a hotel at a decent price for September.

It's probably because early April is best season for sakura, so ya, u may find it hard to get a good deal.

I think depends on the city. I found good deals in Yokohama.

You guys are so close! A month away!

Moving to East Asia isn't easy! So many things to sort... Even though I am not leaving this city until October I've still been starting on my checklist...

Anyone going to rent an apartment upon arrival (or soon after)?

Most of us at Kyoto university only get to stay at the offered dormitories for 6 months, so we're gonna have to rent apartments in September.

Also, to all of you MEXT scholarship grantees, be sure to join Log into Facebook | Facebook, a facebook page where the rest of us hang out. I managed to meet 7 people who are going to the same university already. 👍

Renting an apartment is the way to go! It is east to get sucked into the university bubble - but you will learn more outside of it.

Man, thanks for posting that group! I had searched a number times and kept finding only applicant groups and ones from 2012, 2013. This is awesome!

Good luck preparing everyone.

I agree with what you said, but I have to add that my dorm costs about 18.000 JPY per month, whereas an appartment would cost upwards of 50.000 JPY. When you add the other expenses like the deposit fee, reikin and shikikin it quickly becomes expensive. Plus you have to know that you're moving into an unfurnished flat, with nothing but a bathroom and kitchen unit. Furnishing it would cost at least another 100.000 JPY I guess ...

Not to forget the transport expenses involved travelling between your apartment and the campus.
When you move closer to the campus you may pay higher rent in exchange for saving on transportation and the travel time. Likewise, the cheaper options (usually some distance away from the campus) will cost you higher on travel.

Well, in his case, Kyoto, is only time and exercise as the bicycle is the way you move around the city :D

I disagree - research fellowships and supported periods of research are an essential part of a career in academia.

Does anyone know if, as research students, we have to enroll in the masters we listed on our application form when we applied to mext? Or after a year as a research student, can we change our mind and enroll in a different course in the same department? I can't find any 'rules' about this.

(6) If a grantee desires to step up to a regular course for a degree from a Research Student non-degree course, in principle, he/she must move on to the graduate school of the university at which he/she is studying as Research Student. If proceeding to the graduate school is deemed to be inappropriate given the grantee's major field or ability, he/she may be allowed to transfer to another graduate school provided that he/she is admitted to enroll in.

Straight out of the application guidlines. ;)

Everyone that got the scholarship, could you tell me something about your research proposal? I'm working on mine right now (I want to apply as a research student), but I read somewhere that you have to write it having in mind what you intend to research for the master's thesis as well. Is this true? I was thinking of only writing what I plan to do as a Research Student.
