Is there any further context to go with this?

Or maybe the guy just had such an underdeveloped sense of self that he felt below the plane of existence somehow and just longed to feel he was even one of the insignificant unwashed masses?

Ohh okay thank you. I assumed it may be some sort of set phrase but getting no significant Google results made me wonder. Is the overall meaning basically that he was in the mood he could become a member of existence he'd continued to long for? This sentence to me seems like something that is the english equivalent of "I felt I could finally become the person I always wanted to be since I was young" is that it or do I miss something?

Yep haha. He's about to enter the school he's always wanted to go to and he is just describing how he feels having said in the previous text box he can't quite put the feeling into words. It's from a game (Super Dangan Ronpa 2) that I'm attempting to go through because learning yayyy lol.
