What would be an accurate understanding of this? Is it describing the hallway as splitting into two? I dont really understand, is it split into two corridors so-to speak?

Looks to me like 福星號, maybe the name of a Chinese ship?

Just to clarify; these are the characters for fortune/luck (福) star (星) and it looks like the old kanji for number/unit (號) which is used in Chinese ship's names. Could be a nameplate from one of the Star Ferry ships, as they have names similar to this. It wouldn't be a Japanese ship name as Japan uses a different naming convention.

Imagine the bunny singing "My Way".
