Hi,

What is そこからだと? I understand そこから, but I don't get what だと is doing.

This is supposed to mean "You should have said something, we had no idea" (sarcastic; they actually knew very well).

I am struggling to see how じゃないか, which presumably has at least some nuance of questioning (?), fits this sentence.

(ふくろう便 refers to method of sending letters using owls, in case not obvious.)

1. "If it's from there," to be literal about it. It's stating that if he sat there, he could remain half hidden and still hear the red-headed family's voices.

3. It's more saying "clearly" here. 知らなかったじゃないか -- "clearly we didn't know." Or "Like we knew that."

4. Yes, I would say it has to be that. I'm not entire sure on what it's actually saying, though.

2)
"baby talk" rather than "childish";-)

3)
じゃないか has a nuance of complaint there.

2. Yeah, I thought I may have not put that quite right, but I couldn't remember the word that has 幼 in it. 幼稚語 or something like that. I just went with the closest thing I could think of.

3. In that case, "Like we were supposed to know that!" is more appropriate.

Thank you both.
Does (3) have any questioning tone (in the Japanese I mean)?

幼児語 or 赤ちゃん言葉 is the one.

I don't think so, since it's not 知らなかったじゃないか, i.e., the subject of 知らなかった is you / the addressee.

Thanks... depressingly I still have no feel whatsoever for these distinctions.

It'll come with time. Just keep at it. It might help you to get (more) listening practice. That way you could hear the intonation.
