iOS 7: how do you like it?

To all iUsers: have you upgraded to iOS7 yet?

We have four devices in our household, it's taken over two hours (three hours in case of an old iPad) to download and install the new OS. It certainly "revolutionary" in comparison to its predecessor, at least aesthetically. All gradients are gone, replaced by W8-esque tiles and flashy colours.



What I like:

- in Safari, the URL and the search field have been merged, just like in Google Chrome

- new search device, Spotlight: can be accessed by swiping the screen. It searches the entire device, contacts. notes, emails, apps, etc

- folders can now hold unlimited numbers of apps

- camera roll is categorised by date

What I still need to get used to:

- the new Safari tabs: 3D and scrolling; and they can now be swiped

- in order to close apps you have to double tap the Home button which brings up all running apps which can then be swiped away; a tad more complicated than before

There's much more, but it'll take days to comprehend and get used to all changes.

Just wondering how you like your upgrade.

I've been digging it so far. There are a number of new techniques I need to integrate into my daily usage, but aesthetically, I'm on board. I like lightness and minimalism, and I think this is the way people in the future will simply prefer to be. If you think of old literature, the word to describe it is often 'verbose', and if you think of old movies, the way to describe them is often 'slow.' Not to say I don't enjoy them, just that those are negative points of someone today looking at them.

In the same way, I think someone looking at computer interface in the 00's will think of it as 'heavy' rather than just being clean digital interfaces. For at least 20 years, until the 00's nostalgia starts kicking in

lol what's with the colour? Is it because Tim Cook is gay? I always knew iPhone was a feminine phone, but iOS 7 took it to a whole new level.

I don't know where you got that assumption about Tim Cook's sexuality from, but i must admit it made me lol a little. It feels to me like iOS7 is a combination of Windows Phone, Android, and iOS mashed into one. Being an Apple hater, i will criticize them for ripping off android and WIndows, but that's for another time and is an argument i am NOT going to start. I personally think, in spite of these things I mentioned, that iOS 7 is the best version yet. Their devices themselves don't ever improve, but for the first time in Apple's history, they have broken their static mold, and made something different than when the iPhone first came out, because iOS has looked relatively the same since its conception. All that said, good luck Apple in catching up with Android's hardware and software innovations that are off the charts right now.

To chime in on the daft remarks on sexual orientation: I too don't know what colours have to do with it. Totally out of place.

A week into the upgrade I have to admit that I still haven't got used to it. While certain features are quite useful, I strongly dislike the bland design of the mail boxes which leaves me wondering which mails are new and which aren't as well as the outrageously pallid date selector (see below).

So far, so good here. The new music player is among the things I particularly dislike about this new OS. I mostly learn my Japanese through 30-minute lessons on my iPhone/Pod and the new scrubber isn't too terribly accurate or conveniently placed for times when I need to go back 10 seconds or so.

Aside from that complaint, though, I'm having a hard time finding anything to complain about! At first I thought that it was weird how the whole screen moves slightly in relation to the way you tilt your device, but it's subtle enough to have grown on me.

What I appreciate the very most about this update is that mostly everything is minimal now. I'm pretty obsessed with minimalism, so going from the flashy glass buttons and general layout to relatively flat and smooth UI is wonderful. It feels a little more like an early 2000's flash game UI (with anti-aliasing) than I would have wanted, but I still prefer this style over the old one. Also, LOVE how easy it is to close apps now!

Haven't people gotten beyond that by now? It's not like Google is 100% great and Apple is 100% terrible. Being so biased toward one over an other is like saying Coke is original, and Pepsi rips them off. Pretty silly. All these tech companies borrow from each other all the time.

In what way do they not improve? Have you used iPhone 1 and compared it to iPhone 5? There are a lot of differences, but they are incremental, in the same way pretty much all tech companies work. You can't redesign the wheel every two years.

Anyway, you've admitted you're a hater, which is the first step in overcoming things and having a balanced opinion.

I use the calendar a whole lot, and am just getting used to it. It's not bad, but it isn't as intuitive as the old one was... yet. And appointments are done in minutes instead of five-minute blocks, so scheduling on the half hour is less smooth.


I am loving Safari's upgrades, linking the bookmarks on my home Safari to the iPhone's ones, though I'd like to have them know to connect to the mobile version of a site like, say, Facebook. And the quick switch screen (double clicking the home button) is much nicer, swiping up to close a program.

I love it. For all the reasons mentioned and one unmentioned one; the control center! It's so much more convinient being able to adjust settings such as wi-fi and brighteness without taking multiple steps in settings. As well as having a built-in torch feature, which you needed apps for before.

I also like how you can have unlimited tabs in safari as opposed to the old 8. Makes opening all the new threads on JREF much easier xD

I agree, it's irrelevant to the discussion, and it's actually this man who's behind the design of iOS7.

That's good news, as I have given up on the latest version of Tapatalk (too confusing, not user-friendly, and horribly slow) in favour of Safari.

It's just fanboyism -- Very similar to saying that a certain car X is absolutely terrible on the basis that it isn't car Y, regardless of the fact that both cars have the exact same basic functions, and are both capable of getting you to where you need to be in the same amount of time.

Being an avid fan of video games, I get way more than my fair share of people fighting over which console is the best, or whether games should be played on the PC/console, etc.

I love it. For all the reasons mentioned and one unmentioned one; the control center!

I had to slap my forehead there, how on Earth could I have forgotten this? This was a pretty huge update for me, as I always adjust the brightness of my screen when I go into classes, movies, when my battery is low and so on. Plus, I don't need my flashlight app anymore! It REALLY cut down on the ridiculous amount of time it took to toggle these settings.
