Hi all,
I am applying for the MEXT 2012 and have come up with the questions below: (appreciate for all the helps for clearing my thoughts!!)
Can I apply the master program instead of research student on the MEXT form? or is the chance of getting the scholarship higher for research student compared to master?
I understand from reading the posts that most of universities require us to actually go japan and take the entrance exams there. I managed to find some university admissions would evaluate qualifications based on the materials we submitted. So here's what i got confused...should I apply MEXT and upon getting acceptance, turn in together with the applications to the universities?
Or do I get the letters of acceptance and turn it to MEXT?
btw...if i have to get the letters of acceptance, do I send my research program to my potential professors and ask them to accept me as regular graduate students?
:?:?
Thank you so much in advance!!🙂🙂

Hi all,

Can anyone give me any comments?? :(

Alsoツ…does anyone know what kind of information the embassy is looking for in ツ"present field of studyツ" on the applicationツ…

Since I graduated majoring in Ling & Psychツ…but I would like to do MBA for my graduate studiesツ…should I put what I am looking to study/researchツ…?

Thanks everyone!!!
🙂

I know of some people who directly got into the masters program by taking the entrance exam in their country. I guess it will not be problematic. I'm not sure about the paperwork though. I think you can just ask your embassy. I don't think you will be judged on whether you do the masters or the research student.
Present field of study is what you did for your bachelor degree.
Research program is what you plan to research.
I think there does not necessarily need to be a connection between the two, but you have to persuade them that you can both do your research proposal as well as that it is a good proposal. These two things are major. The details such as masters or research student and so on, are very minor. Just ask the embassy politely how to do it.

In case you are selected, you will receive documents that you can send to your possible supervisors. It might be helpful to already have contact with these people before you have to send them the info. The amount of time to find a supervisor is quite short compared to the other deadlines.

If we talk about Japan UNI, as far as I concerned, it's true to say that research students have more probability to be accepted rathen than master. but... I applied master degree from the beginning,, got the entrance examination through SKYPE video conference, with 6 professor from graduate school that I applied for. and I got the Acceptance, but I was in the process for getting scholarship from private organization, insted of MEXT at that time.

for your info, now it seems possible if you want to get a fast track to apply master in Japan Uni, but in term of MEXT, they might be still in the line of accepting the research student for the priority. for your reference, G30 can be your choice. MEXT and fast track to Master as well. but be aware only a few of G30 UNI member, that have a MEXT Scheme for this path.

That what I know,,,
for your reference,, :D

Can anyone tell me what the interview is like and what it is about? Also I am not familiar with what they mean by study/research program. In the initial application for MEXT, I simply wrote an idea relating to the subject that I had for many years. Surprisingly they have asked me to appear for the english examination ( and japanese) followed by an interview a week from now. I need to start filling my application, I received it only yesterday, could anyone give me some tips to fill up the form especially the study program part.
Also I would like to know, what next? Do i need to contact a professor to secure an admission.
Another doubt I have is regarding the course, i applied for master's but many post suggest that we get in as research students and then move towards the graduate course, I didn quite get that.

In my case, the only question they really asked was "why do you want to go to Japan / why is it important to study your research topic in Japan?" But that could have been because they didn't really understand my proposal :)

Basically you want a story about what you've already studied, what you want to continue to study, and why it's important to do that in Japan. I think they also check to see you have an interest in Japan, but aren't addicted to Manga / Anime, etc.

Thanks buddy GunmaKun, i'll be specific, i am applying for the earthquake engineering department. I have a few questions if you could help me understand:
1. My research proposal is an idea that popped in my head long time back, but there are signs showing someone may have already done it once I decipher their technical point of view. If it so happens that my proposal is not genuine, will they reject it? Also, once I do get through if the professors do find the topic to be repetitive would they cancel the scholarship or would they provide me with another topic?
2.Should the proposal be confined to the space given in the form?
3.Also the FSO claims that after you get the scholarship you do not need to bother looking for a professor that is they would help you finding an appropriate professor, is this the right thing to do? And they also say that the proposal would be send through a screening committee, so what is the acceptance rate like?
P.S.- Are you applying this year or have you already applied?

First off, I'm already receiving this scholarship and am currently a 1st year PhD student. As for your questions:
1) Your examining board probably won't understand anything about engineering (mine didn't) and hence all you really need to explain is some basic things you want to research, not necessarily the entire plan you have. During your interview, you will probably have to explain in very simple terms what it is you want to study.
2) My proposal was a couple of pages typed out that I attached to the application.
3) The way it worked for me is the consulate (embassy) first gives you the initial "go ahead" then it's up to you to find a professor. The wording the the application is pretty bad, but it's basically up to you to find a place you want to study and have up to 3 professors send you a letter of acceptance. If you haven't already, you should research schools that offer the specific degree / type of research you're interested in so that you can share that during the interview process. I never contacted anyone before I sat for the interview, but waited until I had the preliminary acceptance from the consulate. After that I received a total of 2 replies from professors, and the rest, as they say, is history.

Thanks a ton. You're the best. Hope we get to meet sometime in the future.
I know I am being immature but better safe than sorry, when I contact the professors should the conversations be formal, semi formal or informal. Is it better to communicate with a professor lower down the hierarchy and is it advisable to contact more than one professor from the same school (what if all of them accept me)?

Interview

I screwed the interview (Interview conducted by our Education ministry), only respite I have is other's too suffered the same. I don't know if they would cancel the whole earthquake engineering course itself, lets see. But I think the embassy interview went well, the japanese loved me or may be they behave the same towards everyone. I dont know
