I can understand when some members are getting tired of explaining things over and over again.
We got the same Japanese/Visa questions over and over again and still they respond to them... I find that friendly. So in one way I do find your post a bit disrespecting towards some members.
Several years, meaning you have 2 accounts? Is that allowed?

I think it's kind and friendly when they respond to help new members, but when it's about "OMG Japan is racist", "OMG Japanese don't know history" and the similar topics like that.
I'm talking about older threads. I didn't say I'm a member here for several years.

I think if new members would take the time and use the search function a lot of repetition could be avoided. Since that is not the case, JREF gets a lot of repeats....
I wanna live in Japan what do I need to do?
Do I need a visa to work?
Do I need an education to work in Japan and I don't speak or read Japanese...is that a problem?
It's questions like these that don't need new thread after new thread, you could/can find these answers very easily.
Just my two cents....

I have no problem with the new people. For them, it's their first question anyway.
What I mean is some old members repeating themselves in more general discussion topics. Seems like an obsessive fixation of some sort.

As for me, I've always found certain issues that are extremely complex are not usually answered in one thread and that various view points only expand knowledge of the issues. If a person doesn't want to read more, go to another thread.
No offense to you personally, but I find it suspicious that a month long new member (supposedly) is claiming they are now tired of people who have been part of this community on JREF for years upon years. Seems a bit crass to me, despite the purposeful lack of examples.

What is "the recent one?"
Why is it important to merge the topics when many might be asking a somewhat different question?
How does merging a few similar topics into one massive blob of a post make things easier or better? Doesn't it make it even more difficult to read?
So you're saying that for new members you shouldn't worry about merging them but old members you should? Or that new members should be assumed to not know better and not PUNISHED like older members should? Is this what you are insinuating with the differentiation?
Honestly, I don't see what your point is by these threads that consistently want to redo the way the forum is run. Your being quite imposing don't you think?

Just to get on a more productive footing with this thread and there's information to whomever it relates: the search function has been completely missing for me the last couple days.
I've tried using it with several different searches and it always kicks back the same message : 'Sorry - no matches. Please try some different terms.'.
Which is extremely frustrating not only because I'm hampered by Japanese text being unsearchable from the outset but because most searchable terms are so commonplace Google isn't even an option for pulling up the vast majority of old JREF posts. This may need replacing in the site problem forum, though...

I agree with you that this search function isn't working very well, but this has been discussed many times as well and there has always been said use the search function on top under the navigation bar.
But still... the normal one should be fixed.

Although the task bar one was also my problem. Is there another link ? :?And I know the whole system has never worked well (particularly since last upgrade
) but I'm talking about completely useless, as in NOTHING coming out -- null, nada NO results whatsoever.

I think it works pretty good... a lot better than the one under it... you have to select Forum though.

BTW, did you notice that you get good results when searching JREF posts with Google?
I found JREF posts ranking impressively high. Even member names, too--provided that the name is not very common...

I really don't mind as it sometimes is faster to type a repeat answer than it is to go back through the many posts I have made over the past 3 1/2 years to find the one I am looking for even with the search function. If the answer is too simple and easy to find I just ignore it as someone will answer it sufficiently. Besides, I enjoy adding what I can to help people out even if I already said it in another thread.
