The other reason why I am against it is because I speak Japanese and English. I feel I am in a strong position because of it. If more people are able to speak Japanese I get more competition which is NOT GOOD for me.

It is not selfish to have advantages over others in work and business. Everyone wants to have an advantage. Is it selfish to study harder to be better than anyone else? Ofcource not. You sound like a communist.

It is even more selfish to force some people to learn a language. It is not up to the government but to the individual.

It's selfish to want a government's policies to follow your own personal wants. Laws are for the good of the country, not just a small selection of people, and if a language requirement would be beneficial overall, it shouldn't matter that you're afraid of a bit of competition. And if you are afraid of competition, find another way to stay on top.

I can't fathom where you came up with that idea.
Every government is justified in rationally deciding who can or can't immigrate to their country, and if Japan wants only residents who can speak Japanese passably, there are a lot of good reasons for such a policy.

So you don't much care for kanji, huh? 頭いたい followed by 難しい is like pulling your hair out in a loud grumble "Ahhh, noooo my poor head !!! Too difficult ! It is hard." Weird. But somehow the point still comes across...

just going by the word order he used.

Centrajapan's original sentence is actually grammatically "perfectly" stated in a casual, conversational setting. I was giving him a hard time about the way it was portrayed here. When inserted to standard puncuation, the cadence becomes familiar. It is as if the beginner were crying out "Kanji is soooo hard it makes my head ache ! Difficult !

If you ever have to speak more properly, "Kanji ga difficult my head becomes painful" (It's been forever since it hit me that hard, but this grammar....i think so anyhow....)

Without any punctuation at all, it comes across like
"Kanji head hurts hard"

It wouldn't be so bad if it were written like,
"漢字、頭がいたい…難しい"
At least then it sounds like "Kanji...my head hurts. It's hard."

I think the problem is that it is off topic as this topic is not about how to say that "Kanji hurts your head".

All that is left to say is that what CentraJapan wrote was perhaps what a mod should have noted earlier. And that is it was ENTIRELY CORRECT.

Except perhaps for the dubious spacing and obviously for the impropriety of addressing your fellow members as your best friend...

Actually, I disagree that centrajapan's original sentence (from another thread entirely) was correct. If anything were to be done differently, I think jumping on the use of Japanese in the English forum earlier would be the best candidate!

Even if he give him the benefit of a doubt, it is still a terrible sentence, especially for written Japanese, wouldn't you agree?
