The Dollar is worth ****. US is running out of cash to support their imperialistic habits. It is Japan and China which is supporting US economy these days.

Omoiyari should be hodo hodo. Japan is paying wages for idjut Americans. To do..? apart from raping teen agers.

I am American. So I support the troops because US is the greatest nation on this earth ad nauseam.

the decision is to be made by the Japanese people.

out of respect to the Japanese people..we have o say in this.
if the Japanese people see th US troops as allies then they might stay.
if they are seen as invaders then they should leave .

old timers in japan see the US as an invading force that defeated japan and forced japan to give up its army so it would be dependent on the US military for protection.

the youth in japan either don't care or are highly patriotic...yet they see the US as allies now and welcomes their stay on Japanese soil...that is mainly due to fear from N-Korean and Chinese power.

japan suffers from many "occupations" if this phrase is used ...
Sakhalin islands up north taken by the Russians and Okinawa (Ryukyu) taken by Americans...

I agree with you scorpion da black brother , that's the right ...

The fact that Japanese people aren't on the streets throwing molotov cocktails left and right justifies their stay.

Actually there still remans some daydreaming minorities here.
For example...
Japan Revolutionary Communist League Revolutionary Marxist Faction
http://www.jrcl.org/english/e-top.htm

This year the police in Zama, Kanagawa, which has a big US base found two metal pipes for a mortar attack.
Many US media said it might have something to do with Al-Qaeda, but they are the dreamers who live in a most peaceful and most successful comunist country, Japan.
It is more appropriate to say it is a corporate or salaryman communism here.

well that is weird way to put...
so there is japanese who hate america, fear globelization, and they are totally against imperialism....

but does this group of people represent all the japanese people?

there is many groups who fight by the way Derfel san like the JRA

...
but does this group of people represent all the japanese people?
...
NO.
Some Japanese lefty guys claimed something like...
The US nuke was dirty, but the communist nuke was clean!
Or even now, A Chinese warship coming to Tokyo is "for friendship", but the US one is for accelerating Japan's ultra-militarism.

Wish super-rich Chinese entrepreneurs would teach a lesson to the revolution-loving Japanese.

There are that kinda rebels anywhere, but most of the time, they're just lowlifes pissed about their low salary, lack of success or something, they just need a cause, any cause as long as it promises to destroy the present state they're in and rebuild the country in some wondrous way.
Sometimes rebels are justified, but in a prospering country like Japan there's no need for militarism.

well, that is true, why would some one not like to be in japan?
it has grown to be an awesome country.
but some japanese people are not satisfied with what japan has become and wish it could respect traditions more...instead of being a country where people just emitate the west.
i know that from my interactions with many japanese on line

Well one thing is for certain, only experience you gain (as a country) can preserve traditions in a civil way, in our open world that is. If you let someone take over that, it will either turn into neo-futurism, destroying everything old and rebuilding the whole thing, or radical conservationism enforced with some militarism too. Let the Japanese people come over that issue as time passes, after all in this case its them who are influenced by the west, and not the west forcing its ways on them.
The only thing that has to be dealt with in a quick manner is the flood of unnecessary English words in the language that have equivalents in Japanese.

You know, the Japanese people are really into being isolationist. So I can sympathize some of them would want to leave for freer countries. But why should North America take more of them in when they are not allowing others in with open arms despite the cry of help due to population decline. A Visa is a tit for tat deal. Compared to the rest of Asian countries, the Japanese still have it the best. They should come and see the rest of southeast Asia, especially China. If they just tried eating the MSG infested food that you would want to throw up, and breathed in the smog from Beijing China, the Japanese need to be thankful that they still have the most declicious food (unless if you are vegetarian) to offer. Grunting that Canada or Hawaii is a better place to live doesn`t wash. It might be so, but the Japanese have it good enough. The Chinese who have to endure nasty food and toxic shopping malls with toxic fumes leaking out need help migrating abroad to North America.

US Forces Should Remain in Japan

In my opinion US forces should remain for the reason they were placed there.

The war is over but in my opinion Japan still does not respect Australian waters.

Sorry if it hurts your feelings, but that is the way I feel because Japanese fish the Australian waters for whales as they please with no regard for Australia.

The whales regularly can be seen from across Australia's Coast and bring a lot of tourist to Australia. They are used to approaching ships and when Japanese kill them, other whales remember and stay away.

If they were Indonesian fishing boats, they would be placed under detention, however Australia can't do much against the Japanese.

For that reason, I would like to see the military presence in Japan do something to keep the Japanese out of Australian waters where they do not belong.

I highly doubt that the US military would do anything to stop Japanese whaling. It's not their purpose. So it seems a silly excuse to me.

This is not about stopping whaling. It's about showing a bit of respect for the territory of other Countries.

The reasons you are giving for your opinion that the US forces should stay in Japan seems to be extremely off base. Let's see, the US forces have been here for sometime now, they are here now, and yet the Japanese companies that do whaling, for whatever reason, in so forth and so on, are doing their whaling, right? So how can the presence of the US forces have anything to do with it?

I very strongly suspect that you have an agenda which may be fine in the forum on Whaling, but this particular sub-forum is to discuss things here in Japan that have to do with, are connected with, or are affected by the presence of the US forces here.

Do you have any data or studies to back up your idea?

This is not about stopping whaling. It's about showing a bit of respect for the territory of other Countries.

Then why did you bring up whaling?

The military of the USA doesn't control Japanese whaling or fishing, or for that matter where they do those things. I think it's up to Australia to protect their own boundaries and they certainly shouldn't expect the USA to do it for them.

Ok, let me be more specific, the US military was placed in Japan in order to prevent renewed Japanese militarism.

Norwegians whale also, but they do it in their waters. Japan is obviously throwing it's weight around and will probably soon decide to no longer recognise Australia's claimed waters as belonging to Australia. That would be the next step to creating conflict just as we see in the middle east.

So if you can see Japan doing this to Australia and don't feel worried, then that's fine, however as an Australian it does not make me feel comfortable.

I feel that Australia should be able to conserve the wildlife within it's waters and have that be respected by other countries.

Japan can whale, but I want them to do it in their waters and respect Australia, and I would prefer their military remain small as a result of not respecting Australian waters.

Then let's put issues about what might, or might not be Australian waters aside, and focus on the reason US forces were in Japan in the first place, why they stayed, and why they are still here now.

I doubt that anyone would doubt that the reason the forces are here, is because of WWII. Japan surrendered to the US, and so occupation and re-governmenting begain. That was the start of the forces being here in the first place, right?

Is this thread about the U.S. military presence in Japan or about whaling?

If you only wish to discuss whaling, I suggest you do it in the whaling section and not open unrelated threads as a pretext to talk about whaling in other areas.

I do believe that the military forces should be shrunked and more discipline should be instilled in the military as for I am part of the USAF, but leave japan, I don't think so, because it gives a lot of people a chance to learn about different culture and instilled, but I do understand that the military does a lot of awful things and stuff. Like I'm interested in Japanese history, language, music, art, movies, and other soughts of things. So when I become civilian in a few years, I'll try to live here, because I love it out here. I'm stationed in okinawa and I love the peaceful nights, the people, the live bands, becoming bilingual in japanese. Its something really amazing. Thats what I fear for those who don't get to the chance to indulge themselves in this amazing culture, but for those who don't want to be here, than I believe they shouldn't be here.

Past time to go

I grew up around the military in Far East Asia. If you are like me, then you know that there are two kinds of soldiers: Those that live here and those that come here to party. *shrug* Those that settle down, get married with a local and have a kid (like me) are alright--and their kids are alright because this is HOME. As for the others? Well, after a lifetime I've come to realize that the number of partiers and troublemakers are MUCH higher on that other side.

This latest rape case (or cases) is being sensationalized in the view of some people. But these are people that don't LIVE HERE. This is NOT the first rape case. Was it last year that a teenager was raped, killed and discarded? This is a regular occurance. Laugh, joke, and hedge all you will. Rapists are trash, and anyone that defends them are too.

If the price of peace and prosperity with the US is allowing their servicemen to rape the women of this country, then it is past time for the US to go. Japan IS an ally. Japan has respected their side of that coin.

I think Japan has been very patient with the US. The US didn't pay for its embassy in Tokyo for years. The US get's angry when Japan catches bad beef. Japan pays a premium price for everything that comes from the US. We can go on about this.

But the point is: Do all these bases belong here? There are over a DOZEN bases in Japan. We can talk about WWII, the treaty, the good that the US, in fact, HAS done. Yup, u-huh, but do Japanese deserve to be raped? No.

The Japanese have since WWII, in very good faith, turned around. Yes, they have become an economic giant. Great, good for them. But it's costing them. They are suffering the same pains that the US is: Unemployment, disillusionment--pick your industrial fallout. But more than this, they loose their culture daily. They are loosing themselves. They are paying dividends that are irreplacable. We can talk about this too.

What are the purposes of the bases? Having lived in several in Japan, I certainly loved them. But are they necessary here? Is the US really doing the world a favor by being here of all places?

Drop the attitude and be honest:

The US wants to wage a political and economic war in Iraq? Great. Cool. Yay, oil. So then, why doesn't the US put a dozen bases over THERE, where their presence is SO obviously needed? I think if they did so then their weapon sales to terrorists would go all the more smoothly.

Economic and political realities? That's the world, right?

Look at Japan as an outsider and you'll see it for the sides that it has: The old guard (Yeah, THEY are still here, and, yeah, THEY are still in the offices of power--jerks), the corporations (learning everything bad from the example that shifty foreign business has taught them--so blind), and finally the people. The Japanese are a good people. And these soldiers that I grew up around, worked with, TRAINED, are raping--not the jerks in power, not the corporations--but the PEOPLE that are my neighbors and friends and family.

I did my part for the US. I did my part for the military. And if there is one thing I've learned is to recognize and fight for what is RIGHT. And right now the US is NOT right.

Stow your misquided history lessons. Your illusions about political realities. People like you are making the situation worse: Because the Japanese want it stopped.

But jerks like YOU want the rape to continue.

And the old guard WILL come back because of people like you.

I pity you. And I pity me because I am embarassed to be a citizen of the US. I pity us all, because more than likely Japan will back down and the raping will continue.

But don't let me catch you, citizen.

"national interest" is tied to the economy of the nation and well-being (saftey and security)of the general population. But it's cool to disagree. You're an idealist and I'm a realist. I even have idealist friends -- as long as they like beer or chu hi.

what's "chu hi" ?
i imagine some sort of snack to go along with the beer?

I was talking with a Captain in the US Air Force stationed in Guam, he told me that they were moving 8,000 soldiers this year from Okinawa to Guam...
