When we lost our last cat , we decided no more. We always has a "few" squirrels in the back yard that I liked to watch. I figured I'd get a feeder for them and mounted it right under the back window to watch. First about 5 showed up. Word got around amongst them and now I have 12. I figured when snow hit , they would all hibernate , but no such luck. They plow through deep snow and still feed 3 times a day. I figured they would get bored with just peanuts , so I bought a bag of almonds to try. They treat them like a good steak , so now I feed them 50/50 , almonds & peanuts. I thought it would be a lot cheaper than a cat to feed them , but not so. I spend $50 to $100 a month and barely keep up with their appetites.
I got an unexpected bonus with night time visitors also. The peanuts on the ground attracted a big raccoon I called Rocky. He was obsessed with eating the peanuts and would ignore table scrapes until he got all the peanuts. Soon he showed up with his wife and 3 babies. Since I didn't have enough table scrapes for all of them , I bought dog food for them. Word got around (I think they all have cell phones?) and soon a 20 pound skunk showed up with his girlfriend. I figured I was going to have a smelly fight right under my window , but they all get along great. Soon a big possum started showing up with his girlfriend. By this time , I'm buying $100 a week of dog treats to feed them all. Also going through a lot of flashlight batteries used to watch them all in the dark. Lucky for me , they all disappeared after the first snowfall. Although expensive , I don't have to take any of them to the vet at least.
I guess I should feel lucky to have such a backyard zoo since I'm in the middle of a big city with heavy traffic all around my home. I think my next step will to get a camera that feeds to my computer so I can sit down to watch.
My city laws prevent me from shooting the pigeons that swoop down in a group of 20 and eat all the peanuts in about 5 minutes. I'm reduced to shooting big rubber bands at them which scares them away for about 5 minutes. I'm going to try an inflatable hawk bird tied to the feeder and blowing around in the wind a bit. I'm guessing a kamikaze pigeon will divebomb it though.

The vet bills here are expensive. It's $80 to walk in the door. Add a couple of tests and it goes above $300. You go twice a year , even if there are no problems. Our last cat had thyroid problems , so we had to rub a cream medicine into her ear twice a day. The meds ran close to $1000 a year. Money wasn't the real issue , it was having to take them in to put them to sleep when their quality of life was over.

That's true. But surely you don't have nationalized pet care do you? I would expect pet care to cost more than people care for you.Even American pets have extortionate health care costs!

If a pet has a job and has paid into national insurance…no of course not!
Costs vary widely but the government is looking into standardising prices across the country. Also Vets are being made to standardise what they charge for medication and you can take your prescription to various vet-run online drug retailers which are much cheaper forcing vets to reduce their prices to compete with these online providers. Many small, family run vet practises were bought out by big corporations who began nefarious practises and there's been a backlash to this and prices are becoming much more reasonable.
