Do Japanese use online marketplace?

sure, Amazon.co.jp, Rakuten.co.jp...
I guess ebay also has a .co.jp, but no one I know has ever mentioned shopping there. Japanese folks are not big fans of "used" stuff, from what I've seen; although ebay has new goods for sale and business storefronts, to me it has the impression of a user marketplace, which I think would be considered less trustworthy in Japan.

I wouldn't say this is true at all. eBay itself never caught on in Japan, but Yahoo! Auctions has been popular in Japan for years, and these days, user marketplace sites (Mercari probably being the most famous) are absolutely huge.

I'm not sure when you were here and how much things have changed since then, but I've been here since 2005, and as far as I can recall, neighborhood リサイクルショップ, used clothing stores (古着屋), used book/electronic stores like Book Off and Hard Off, retro video game stores in Akihabara and so on and so forth have always had a pretty major presence here.

good examples, I forgot about book off and recycle shops. I've been on and off since 06, but never had to furnish anything or shop for appliances. The only times I remember stepping into used clothing stores, it ended up being "vintage" stuff that had clearly been bulk shipped from America, and it was all marked up to an extreme.
