Hi,

I read the forums for some time now and I realised that the opinions here are very sophisticated and you can have a neutral and substantial discussion. And I think many users here are interested in other countries, so why not a thread about it? Hopefully that´s the right sub-forum. I will start and tell you something about my home country Germany.

The good things (or some of them):

I guess many know the term "german welfare state". Because the german state gives financial aid to poor, jobless or old people there is some basic covering for the basic and urgent needs of those people. If you visit big cities like Berlin or Munich you will recognize that there are not as many homless people as there are in the US or even in Japan (Ueno Park!).

Our foreign policy is very diplomatic one and our foreign secretary is mediating in all the major international cases. Iran for example. So german citizens are very popular in foreign countries now (maybe especially UK). I have been to Japan last year and in a youth hostel I spoke with a south korean guy, he told me that the german philosophy in terms of foreign policy is great. He thinks the japanese should do this as well, but instead Koizumi yisits the Yasukumi(?) shrine and their policy isn´t very apologizing.

The western parts of Germany have a great and flourishing economy. In terms of biology, chemistry or medicine research the german research is world-class. World famous car companies like Audi or BMW still produce in Germany (and in China or eastern europe, of course).

Germany is a country with a huge and great history of writers, researchers, philosophers. Cities like Weimar (Goethe and Schiller), Dresden (Frauenkirche), Trier (Karl Marx) or Munich are very popular among tourists. Only to name a few. Maybe the famoust german researcher is Albert Einstein.

- - - - - - -

The bad things (some of them):

The germany society is too old. We get more and more old people who don´t work but get retirement pension. In 2040 there will be 40% old people. Because of that our welfare state isn´t very stable anymore. There aren´t enough children to hold the system up. German politicians are too reserved and halfheartd to do real reforms. They only "improve" the system. But it needs structural changes.

We think everythink is bad. The biggest german daily newspaper "BILD" is writing all the time how bad german football is, how stupid german politicians are and how poor the condition of the country is. One consequence is: Germans don´t spend too much many in new products and consum, but they save it. Therefore the retail industry in Germany is not like the one in Japan, where people buy all the time.

The eastern parts of Germany (former communist country DDR) are in a very bad condition. The economy there is absolutely slow and drags the western german one down. The future outlook isn´t shining, too. More and more people relocate from the East to the West. That is threatening the welfare state as well, because the government needs to spend a lot of tax money for the eastern parts.

The gap between poor and rich gets bigger, especially in terms of education. Children from poor families don´t have the same chances to get a higher education than richer children (according to an OECD study).

Australia's positives:
- nice weather except for mid-summer;
- although it's quite expensive you can live in luxuary compared with places like Japan. My last apartment in Australia had a pool, small gym, view of the city, huge living area, huge kitchen, space for two cars, for cheaper than I'm paying for my piddly Japanese apartment;
- the people are hard workers - contrary to the typical stereotypes. I remember reading an article saying that Australians were the hardest workers in the world. I'm sure it was exagerated but I'm also sure there was some truth in it;
- Australia is quite good at sports and has great sporting facilities (if you like that sort of thing);
- The people are generally friendly and helpful;
- From and asthetics point of view, the cities are clean, well designed and well kept.

Negatives:
- summer is too hot in most states;
- public transport is rubbish;
- Australia is the fattest nation on earth. Fatter than America;
- higher education is expensive;
- too many anally retentive, intolerant, and (usually undeservedly) snobby people;
- too many dumb people;
- lack of history and culture. There isn't really such a thing as "Australian culture", unless of course you consider "thowing a steak on the barbie on a Saturday arvo while watching the footy" culture. There are some elements though, like "giving someone a fair go", but those ways seem to be on the way out;
- too much pride in how much one can drink and party;
- customer service is non-existant;
- lack of manners in the traditional sense;
- government regulations on EVERYTHING. Probably the most regulated country on earth!

Good things:
1. Cheap gasoline. [relatively speaking]
2. Emphasis on the individual, rather than on the state. [this attitude is diminishing rapidly, hopefully the govt. will cease it's civil rights violations]
3. Technology is fairly advanced.
4. Lots of space to expand.
5. I'm sure I'm missing quite a few things.

Bad things:
1. Our government is broke, we have a spending deficit, and have had one for decades [excluding the Clinton administration]. Our national debt is HUGE, roughly twice the size of our GDP, and there is no end in sight to our massive debt.
2. Our national retirement system (i.e. Social Security) is completely broke, and my generation will have to pay into the system but will not benefit from it.
3. Our President is a fool, who has no diplomatic skills whatsoever.
4. The nation is currently gripped by a movement towards Evangelical Christianity, which means that many civil rights violations will be overlooked. The gay marriage controversy will rage on for the forseeable future [I'm in favor of an amendment].
5. The President has overstepped his authority by authorizing phone taps without court orders, which is CLEARLY illegal, and has gotten away with it, when he should have been impeached for his blatantly un-Constitutional actions.
6. Our politicians do not care about what their constituents want, unless it's nearing election time. There is a culture of wheeling and dealing your way through the bill-approval procedure. For example, legislation can be attached to other, more popular legislation, even if the two bills are completely un-related.
7. We have strayed from what the Founding Fathers fought for. Big Government has replaced Freedom, Big Brother has replaced Free Speech, and Big Business has replaced the Free Market.

EDIT: I was not aware that Australians were collectively fatter than Americans.

Interesting thread!

So here goes Holland:

Pro's:
  • Dutch way of communication is open and clear; we say what we think
  • Good history of football ("soccer" for some)
  • Greatest harbour of Europe is Rotterdam
  • Due to low corporate taxes Holland is a preferred country for multinationals' headquarters

Cons:
  • A lot has to be done with respect to immigration laws, it is a constant and tiering discussion
  • Taxes on personal income and consumption are way too high
  • The Dutch cuisine.. If you can call it a cuisine..
  • Amsterdam (Sorry Dutch Baka, but the truth has to be said :D)

That's all I can think of right now.

Haha any reason for that besides the rivalry between Amsterdam and Rotterdam. Don't forget that Amsterdam got one of largest historic city centres in the world!

WARNING : This thread was posted in Japanese News & Hot Topics => Economy although it has nothing to do with Japan and little to do with Economy. If you want to post such topics go to the General Discussion Forum (can't move it there as it's a separate forum, sorry), otherwise it will be moved to Chit-Chat or deleted.

I think it wouldn't be appropriate to engage in the good old Amsterdam-bashing so I'll refrain myself from it.. So what do you think Holland's pro's and cons are Dutch Baka?

For the UK:

Pros:

- Beautiful countryside and coastline, especially in Wales and Cornwall;
- Great museums, such as the Science Museum in London, Tate galleries and even my local Potteries Museum;
- Scientists, philosophers and writers to be proud of: Bacon, Chaucer, Shakespeare, Newton, Byron, Darwin, Russell, Orwell, Hawking, to name a few;
- High standard of living - even people on the poverty line have cars, satellite TV and foreign holidays;
- Personal autonomy. You can pretty much do and say what you like, wear what you want, go where you want, think what you want. We don't have the fundamentalist problem that they have in the US, for example, and we just legalised gay marriage.

Cons:

- Tony Blair;
- Cult of the celebrity. People see celebrities behaving badly and getting away with it, and seem to think they can do the same;
- Partly related to the above, dumbing down. People are so stupid. TV is brainless, for the most part. I am sick of Big Brother, soaps, sensationalist news stories read by vacuous bimbos and The Weakest Link, with its questions a nine-year-old would be embarrassed to get wrong. Even our documentaries are shallow and patronising;
- We are too close to the US. I feel like we are more likely to become the 51st state than a real part of Europe;
- People are so negative and suspicious, although that may be more my local area than the whole country. Everyone seems to have hunched shoulders and narrowed eyes;
- Outsourcing. Our manufacturing and services are being increasingly outsourced to developing countries. Jobs are lost here and people are exploited there;
- The monarchy - an outdated and unnecessary drain on the country's resources. If the queen smiled she'd crack her face. :eek:
- Health and education are a joke. I have yet to meet someone who has been hospitalised and had no problems - for example, my healthy young sister-in-law nearly died in childbirth, which should be unheard of but is surprisingly common around here.
The cost of further education is astronomical - I think the average debt on graduating is around GBP15,000, and has to be paid back at little over minimum wage;
- The weather. It is so cold. I shouldn't need to have my heating on on 1st June :eek:

I've just finished from writing a spiel in French. That looks funnier than it should, when one is thinking in French. :LOL:

Anyway, the UK...

Good things:
-- The weather isn't boring.
-- High tolerance of individuality.
-- High standard of living.
-- Interesting, varied scenery in a small space.
-- Easy to reach the coast from each part of the country!
-- Few really poisonous critters.

Bad things:
-- The weather is... frequently crap. ><
-- The National Health service is in its death throes. Especially re. dentists.
-- People aren't amazingly outgoing, except when they're being aggressive.
-- We don't really have distinctive national food.
-- There are always amazingly long queues in banks and post offices.
-- High level of personal debt.

Deutschland ^^
personally I quite like living her but I will try to make it seem objective^^

Pro:
-regrowing large areas of forests ,good nature preservation
-many different dialects
-high efficiancy in doing moist things concerning work
-high standart groceries
-great indie and punk bands
-quite centrist goverment

Con:
-quite a lot of left wing sypathicers and unions with way too much influence
-bad integration of muslims (especially muslims of turkish origin)
-Aggro Berlin
-the small policeman in every German
-high taxes

That's a good one! :LOL:

Austria:

+ Nature preservation
+ Low unemployment rate
+ Stable economy in general
+ Vienna's just a great city
+ Cuisine
+ Beatiful landscapes
+ Our president's such a goodnatured guy
+ Low crime rate
+ Hot summers, cold winters
+ Medical care system
+ Rich musical and cultural history

- National tendencies in politics
- Country ruled by a coalition of Ultra-conservative, pseudo-Christian party and a populist lightweight party
- Homogeneous population
- Hardcore immigration politics (gradually thightening of asylum requirements eg)
- Saddening performance of our national football team
- 130 km/h speed limit on our motorways
- Austria's image, other nation's stereotypes (Mountains, Alms, etc)
- So many People mix it up with Australia

It's interesting you put that as a con. I feel the opposite - I am disappointed that the unions here are losing their power.

Sorry, but this one is all negative

Cheers Kinsao,

I'd say rude (or worse), violent young people are one of my biggest problems with the the way England is going. (that makes me sound old !)
In Bethnal Green, I was surrounded by 3 youths - one blocked my path with his bike, another came up behind me and smashed me round the head (breaking my earing!) - I don't know what the other one's role was.
I thought ''You're not having my phone/ money/ or whatever'', and just ran.
Luckily it was a fairly busy street and they didn't pursue me for very long.
The week before in Edgeware (north London) a kid died after being stabbed by a 16 year old, so I was taking no risks with these 3 lads.

The other incident on the train was earlier this year, and I've been spat at too.

I don't think Japan is a perfect, peaceful paradise, but here is an example of a difference between my country and Japan;

Last year in Kyoto I needed to put some litter in a bin, but some school kids were in the way. As I approached they made great effort to get out of my way and apologise (in English) and were sweet as a nut.

Last week in my home village when attempting to put some bottles in the local recycle bin, I was shouted at and ridiculed for even wanting to use a bin by a gang of 'kids' in a car parked opposite.
You see, using a bin is not 'hard' and is a bit too 'gay' for many of the young people in my area.

It is sometimes not easy to be walking the streets in the UK as a lone,
young(ish) man. I didn't post this at the time because I knew it would deteriorate into a ''what's gone wrong with the world'' style rant, which it has anyway - so sorry.
The world has always been violent, probably worse in the past - but I think something is going wrong somewhere.

Well the Unions here have unrealistic demands and in generell hopefully the left wing will just turn a little more liberal =)
