Why is it weird for a Japanese person to walk with a black person?

Too make it a little worse, many bars and shops in Shibuya/Harajuku or Machida actively hire African men from Nigeria etc to dress like bad stereotype thug rappers and tout their shops/services on the streets. Sometimes quite agressively. So again, many people only see these annoying touts/nampas (and apparantly drug dealers in Machida, but not so sure) who dress and act just like the thug rappers on TV.

well, really, I myself try not to generalize or rely on stereotypes, except with certain social titles (such as "prep", or "jock"). The people shown on entertainment television are but a handful of the african american population.

To truly make a generalization, you would have to track down and talk to every person in the group you were generalizing, and I don't think anyone really does that. lol

Hmmm

Is that the actual truth? You mean shops in Shibuya/ Harajuku pay Africans behave like a thug? Why? What for? And what do those shop owners expect to gain from that? To me, it sounds like they are zealously promoting that stereotype. And not to mention the fact that they(the owners of the shops and bars) are blatantly displaying their ignorance.

"That you use race as an identifier amongst friends is one sure sign about your feelings of identity and race."

Yeah too bad it's just an irrelevant nickname huh?

"I have Vietnamese friends back home in Australia. Never once is race an issue, nor a nickname. Johnny is Johnny. Chuong is Chuong. Azzizzi is Azzizzi, not towel head or anything like that."

So what? I have a right to call my friend whitey, and he doesn't care. I'm guessing because you're supposedly "older" then me that you find it immature or just don't call your friends or associates any nicknames of any kind, but in my world, you call your firends whatever you want, whenever you want. Because if the're really friends, would they care if you nicknamed them whitey?

"Just because you have SOME restraint and don窶冲 call people cracker doesn窶冲 mean your feelings of race are any less strong."

I don't have strong feelings on race. The issue doesn't come up, well, until jerks like you have to come and bombard me.

"Unless you actually have feelings for the girl it should be a COMPLETE non issue to you. Not even worth watching."

I have feelings for her, and not in the love sense, just the fatherly sense. I just don't like it when I have to sit around and watch people choose the wrong path when I know how to fix it and yet don't.

"Oh
My
GOD
And any credibility you have just shattered into a million fractured pieces. You continually keep saying you aren窶冲 racist, you don窶冲 think one race is superior. But in this very paragraph you have written of Caucasians as less moral, less valued and of lesser qualities to Asians. Need I sink to your level and post how there some moral characteristics that Asians seem to lack?
You don't even have to tell me. Your post was idiotic. You ARE judging people on race. You believe, without even meeting someone, that a white person has less values and morals to a Korean for instance. This WILL colour your impressions of people when you first meet them.
YOU
ARE
A
RACIST"

Hmm, too bad I don't hate the entire race enough to make me a racist huh?

"This thread gives numerous clear examples of why you aren't over it. But your first post is the best example."

So wait, when I say I'm not over it I get turned down, but then I'm just supposed to believe your filth? What kind of trade is that?

"So do you get angry and offended when another Asian hits on a girl? When a white guy hits on a white girl? Heck the Asian guy might be a bad guy. You never know."

I don't get offended when I see anybody hitting on anybody. Seems like somebody can't read.

"Then you need to find out why the girls are going for Caucasians. Also something doesn't add up. You keep saying how you are a minority in your area, yet Asians represent 33%?
Odd."

Oh sorry, replace Asian with Korean.

"The fact that you even CARE, that you watch, that these thought processes are in your head is enough to make you a bigot."

OK, this is the problem with you stupid Americans; you completely disregard the word "PREJUDICE"! Prejudice is judging before knowing anything about something. Care to try defending against that?

"It窶冱 none of your concern, none of your business."

Would you let your kids willingly go down the wrong path? I think not.

"Yet in your head you're making it your business."

Well I am her father...

"There窶冱 said to be a big difference amongst Japanese living abroad and Japanese on home soil when it comes to national identity. On the Japanese mainland you will NOT be accepted as Japanese. I tell you this with 99% confidence."

Hmm, too bad I already am huh?

"Oh yes, yes it does. You are half Japanese. But half gaijin. You can never ever be completely Japanese in their eyes."

Um, why should I care? The Japanese I know all know me and consider me to be Japanese. So what if I'm not full-blooded? That doesn't entail me to anything else, cept, maybe those Japanese-only bars...

Many bars and onsens have signs that read 'Japanese only'. And the decision on who enters is decided on how Japanese they look. \
Get educated here: www.debito.org: THE ROGUE'S GALLERY: Photos of places which refuse non-Japanese in Japan
Heck this guy is a Japanese citizen. He has a Japanese name, Japanese family and Japanese passport. Yet he gets refused entry because he doesn窶冲 LOOK Japanese.
Another story is that a group were refused entry into an onsen as they didn't look Japanese and 'scare' other customers. They were later told that one of their children, who looks Japanese (but is Chinese) could enter, but their other child couldn窶冲 as he didn't look Japanese.
Surprised you didn't know of this."

Was I spposed to?

"Which is EXCEPTIONALLY ODD. You will be treated like some kind of weirdo."

Heh, I wouldn't just come into some place with my own set, unless it called for celebration. Most places I ask for chopsticks.

"You were 7. You likely have distorted memories."

Good thing this is just an opinion. Nope, I remember it pretty well.

"Being stared at on the train is likely one of the most common complaints a foreigner (read me and you) makes in Japan."

Even if I was/am going to be stared at, why would I care? Atleast I'm getting attention. Hell if it got a conversation going I'd be more than happy to be eye-candy.

"I don窶冲 know why you need them. But you do. and you must carry it around with you at all times and from what I understand the police can demand to see it at anytime (granted it hasn't happened to me, but has happened to my friend many times. Usually when riding his bike).
It窶冱 a pink and white photo ID card you get from the government office. It窶冱 called a 'Certificate of Alien Registration'.
Again, surprised you didn't know."

Me too.

"Seriously. You don窶冲 LIVE in Japan."

You're right. I liveD in Japan.

"The other night I text messaged a girl. Said 'Oyasumi nasai' in hiragana and kanji. She was SHOCKED that I could write Japanese. Said how good it was. This is NOT a rare occurrence here.
Stop thinking about Japanese you know in Georgia. Keep up. I窶冦 talking about in Japan itself."

Um, I said "within Japan" now didn't I?

"So you窶决e not 50/50? Be prepared for some REAL fun then."

Um, what?

"Sigh. PEOPLE I'M BLUE IN THE FACE HERE!
In Japan. This girl is a student in a JAPANESE HIGH SCHOOL. A school that窶冱 pretty much 99% Japanese. You can act 'Japanese' (or your distorted version thereof) all you want. But just KNOWING you aren't Japanese will mean you are treated MUCH differently in school."

I AM Japanese. I'm pretty sure that's been clarified by now.

"Just like Yun. If you are an exchange student you will be a novelty. Treated differently. If you LIVED here or your kids did they will be treated differently. Likely not very nicely."

And?

"They are patronising you."

My friends wouldn't do something like that.

"They may see some Japanese in you. Heck I can use chopsticks. Fricking amazing isn't it?"

Yes, because that's the only Japanese trait I hold -_-

"Well it is too some Japanese here as I Have been told 'You are just like Japanese' because I can use chopsticks."

Um, you're not like "Japanese" because you can use chop sticks. And, from what I know(but am not going to declare it fact as I don't know), chopsticks are Chinese.

"You are not Japanese. Not full blooded. Not born there. You are a foreigner, just like me, by the Japanese cultural definition of the word."

I was born in Okinawa , so, you're almost right.

"No, you proved earlier in your post that you feel Asians are morally superior. You can窶冲 even keep track of your own bleatings in one post?"

So? It's really too bad you don't live where I live to make such radical defense statements huh?

"Kid the only person who looks bad here is you. Highlighted by the fact that NO-ONES taken your side."

So what? I'm not trying to rally up troops, and there isn't power in numbers all the time.

"And you just said that Asians are superior to Caucasians, one post after saying you didn't feel that way. Incredible."

OK, I want you to read this, and if you neglect it, than I will leave this post and never post again. Ahem: The Asians within the city of Augusta, which is in the state of Georgia, the Asians are indeed superior to the Caucasians. Now then, that only applies to the people within Augusta, NOWHERE ELSE. Try to call me a racist now 🎈

"You're losing it Ape. You have stated numerous times that this bothers you. That you have superiority and identity issues. That Caucasians make you angry, that they offend you when they talk to Asian girls.
You are in one serious case of denial."

Too bad I'm over that huh dip shnoggle?

Yes, it's sad but true. Ame-mura in Shinsaibashi has it's share of them, too. Capitalizing on ignorance isn't very reponsible, but it sure helps make them alot of money. How much would you sell your integrity for?

Like Mad Pierrot said, yeah its truth...
They dress just like gangstas and loiter.

Not total thug... They aren't violent pers e. But yeap. they are paid to act the stereotype as its 'cool'.

Fun story. When I was first in japan I was lost in Harajuku with my buddy. We saw some of the 'thug' touts outside a hip hop clothing shop. We decided to ask them for directions.

Not one of them could speak english at all.

Kinda funny. They are dressed up too look like LA Gangsta thugs but arent even american, and cant speak english.

Does anyone think we should just ignore cyber ape until he gets himself banned?

Well, I know several people who try to act/look like samurai , but don't speak japanese. It's rather funny. lol

But, then again, an LA gangsta thug is nothing to try to emulate.

Kei_Shugojin said:

The Japanese sure do. It's a source of pride for them to be able to generalize about themselves, actually.

so sad

It's very disappointing to discover that. Which reminds me, someone here at the university in which I attend is absent mindedly absorbing the so-called thug culture. He isn't trying to learn about the true African American culture. So, instead he tries to protray the negative stereotypes. And he is from Africa by the way. The guy won't even be himself, I guess he must think this is the only he could fit in, but it's not working.

I guess this answered my question to a point.

So what? I have a right to call my friend whitey, and he doesn't care. Its not a question of whether he cares or not, its the point that the issue was ever enough to warrant a nickname in the first place.

I don't have strong feelings on race. The issue doesn't come up, well, until jerks like you have to come and bombard me.
*sigh* You started it. YOU. You made the intial post about being offended by caucasians talking to asian girls.

I have feelings for her, and not in the love sense, just the fatherly sense. I just don't like it when I have to sit around and watch people choose the wrong path when I know how to fix it and yet don't.
And how is talking to a caucasian the wrong path in and off itself? unless you know THAT causian is a bad guy HIMSELF then there is no problem for you to be fatherly about and theres no 'right path' taht shes not taking. For all you know she could be heading down the best path of her life.

Hmm, too bad I don't hate the entire race enough to make me a racist huh?
You don't have to hate a race to make yourself a racist. Just feel superiority off one race over another. ANY caucasian that said what you just but reveresed, that whites are more moral, of better character than blacks or asians would be called racist. There is no question there.

I don't get offended when I see anybody hitting on anybody. Seems like somebody can't read.
What?
Then whats this?

Well, I know that when I see a white guy hitting on an Asian female I get offended and want to stop them, even if they're no one I know and the Asian isn't my blood.
Need that one more time?

Well, I know that when I see a white guy hitting on an Asian female I get offended and want to stop them, even if they're no one I know and the Asian isn't my blood.

Just in case you missed it

Well, I know that when I see a white guy hitting on an Asian female I get offended and want to stop them, even if they're no one I know and the Asian isn't my blood.

Oh sorry, replace Asian with Korean.
Its funny how much your stories keep changing and shifting.

"The fact that you even CARE, that you watch, that these thought processes are in your head is enough to make you a bigot."

OK, this is the problem with you stupid Americans; you completely disregard the word "PREJUDICE"! Prejudice is judging before knowing anything about something. Care to try defending against that?
I'm not American. You judged me. Before knowing anything about me. Uh-oh. Guess what? :-)
By the way Ape, what nationality passport do you hold? What citizenship?
For the love of god it better not be an American passport or you jsut wrecked yourself beyond measure.

FYI I'm Australian

Would you let your kids willingly go down the wrong path? I think not.
And how is talking to, being with a caucasian the wrong path in and off itself? Like I said, do you KNOw the guy she is interacting with is a bad guy? Do you KNOW his history and character? Or are you assuming absed on race?

Well I am her father...
:?

Hmm, too bad I already am huh?
Oh yeah, so am I. Ummmm no wait. I'm not. Neither are you.

Um, why should I care? The Japanese I know all know me and consider me to be Japanese. So what if I'm not full-blooded? That doesn't entail me to anything else, cept, maybe those Japanese-only bars...
Or suspicion of crime. Or fair legal repesentation. Or workplace rights. Or some onsens. Or a myriad of other things.

Was I spposed to?
Someone so enormed of Japan SHOULD know this.

Heh, I wouldn't just come into some place with my own set, unless it called for celebration. Most places I ask for chopsticks.
So why even mention you owned your own pair. Fun true story. I go to my local konbini at least twice a week to buy dinner. I actually talk to 2 of the people there and in all likelihood will be hitting a bar or two with one of the guys from there one day.
Yet theres an older women there. EVERY time I go there, if she serves me, EVERY time she asks if I want a fork, not chopsticks. Think after a year of my face popping up there she'd know right?

Good thing this is just an opinion. Nope, I remember it pretty well.
I doubt it. Childhood memories are always distorted. Kids have an innate ability to not notice whats really happening around them.

Even if I was/am going to be stared at, why would I care? Atleast I'm getting attention. Hell if it got a conversation going I'd be more than happy to be eye-candy.
You wont be saying that after the 10th inane conversation of 'where are you from' and 'can you eat natto?'

You're right. I liveD in Japan.
Another story change. Did you live or did you visit? When did you live there and for how long?

Um, what?
You're rather mixed heritage. Like me. Thats very amusing and curious for Japanese.

NO
YOU'RE
NOT

You are NO MORE Japanese than Yun is. She has more points on you in that she has lived in Japan all her life. She was born here, raised here, named here. She looks and acts Japanese. But a small 'mistake' of genetics, of parenthood, in that one parent is Korean. Thats enough. Enough for her to not be Japanese in the eyes of her peers. Enough for her to be taunted and treated as an outcast. For something thats not obvious at all unless she says her first name completely or someone investigates her.

You'd be happy to be bullied and picked on? treated like a freak and ostracised? You;d be happy for your kids to get that too?

My friends wouldn't do something like that.
Naiveity.

Yes, because that's the only Japanese trait I hold -_-
It doesnt amtter how many 'Japanese traits' you hold, you're missing one a few important things. 100% Japanese blood or very close too. A Japanese passport and COMPLETE Japanese upbringing solely in Japan

Oh another one of my students. Yui. Also 14. Lived in America for 3 years while her dad worked. Came back. Must now attend an international school because of the treatment she got at her Japanese school when she returned. She wasn't 'Japanese' any more. Kids can be so cruel.

Um, you're not like "Japanese" because you can use chop sticks. And, from what I know(but am not going to declare it fact as I don't know), chopsticks are Chinese.
Duh. I know that. What i am pointing out is the patronising that can happen. That people say i'm like Japanese because I can eat food in a certain way. A way that most of my country men can do.

I was born in Okinawa, so, you're almost right.
Almost. A few Japanese even view Okinawans as different. But those types are real idiots.

So? It's really too bad you don't live where I live to make such radical defense statements huh?
John Lennon. Strawberry Fields. First line of the second verse.

So what? I'm not trying to rally up troops, and there isn't power in numbers all the time.
No but you;d think, if you were right or at least defenceable that SOMEONE, ANYONE ehre would take your side. (as a side whats the bet that a new poster, a one post bandit will suddenly weigh in supporting Cyber Ape?)

OK, I want you to read this, and if you neglect it, than I will leave this post and never post again. Story changes again.
You did NOT mention that in your earlier post about moral values and its irrelevant as you cannot right off 33% of the population like taht.

Question. Would a caucasian in Georgia saying that he and all the other caucasians are morally or intellectually superior to Asians be racist?

Too bad I'm over that huh dip shnoggle?
But you still gotta be fatherly?
And name calling? Backed into a wall much?

This summer I asked a japanese girl I talk to if she had smashed any watermelons at the beach (silly curiosa) and she was stunned, baffled and amazed by how much I knew about japanese culture.. I apparently knew more about it than she did!

see what I'm getting at?
I haven't even been to Japan and I'm already getting the treatment pooka talks about.
if we know any japanese or anything about japanese culture, it seems we're practically japanese! Except we're not.

No. They even have a commonly used word for it, the feeling of "sameness". It escapes me at the moment, but i bet Paultb or mikecash know it.

Due to the fact that Japan is a homogenous society, foreigners they are more likely to get stared at. It not just blacks either, me as a white dude, I was constantly getting stared at. Did it bother me, well at first it was a little overwhelming, but after a while I really didn't care. I can remember multiple times that I sat down next to a Japanese person on a train and they got up and moved. I was glad, that meant more leg room for me at the time being. I swear that there biggest fear is that you are going to start talking to them in English, and they will not be able respond. Either way, it didn't let it bother me in the least. I lived in Akita Ken for about 5 months, and believe me they were more suprised to see foreigners there then compared with Tokyo.

I have ran into the some African guys that kept on pressuring me to go to a club, and he was following our group for blocks. That doesn't really taint my image of black people in general. Just like the greasy looking white dudes peddling low quality jewelry or drugs on the streets, doesn't really taint my image either I believe. Therefore, I'm thinking foreigners in general get more looks, and it's probably more out of curiousity than malice. Since foreigners make up what, about 1% of the nation, it's not strange that this would be behavior out of the ordinary. Are there racist Japanese people, of course there are, but that doesn't make up the majority of the people. As a foreigner, it is something you just have to deal with (the stares), and don't let it bother you. I wouldn't cancel any plans of going to Japan out of fear that you might get some looks, because I had some black friends in Tokyo when I was studying there, and they had no problems interacting with the women.

I'm surprised no one else here said anything. Cyber ape, you are aware that American is not an ethnic background? Sure, if talking about heritage, you can be Japanese, Greek and Egyptian...but not American. American, just simply isn't an ethnic background. It can be a culture and nationally. Are you forgetting Americans range in ethnicity/ancestry? The way you stated your ancestry before made way more sense.

Japan belongs to the Japanese people. If they choose to stereotype people or be "racist" then so be it. Who are you as a foriegner to critisize a people that historically, for the most part kept to themselves and did not interfere with foriegn socities? Nor did they ask you to be there. I couldnt care less how negroes are treated in Japan. They don't need to be there. The more Japanese that move to Japan the less Japanese it will be. It will not be long before there won't be a full blooded Japanese person left in the world due to the liberal west's miscegenation dream. Having a homogenous society, which has worked for the Japanese for thousands of years is starting to being broken down and I think that it's a tragedy.

I would rather not ban you. Instead, I would make a group for you. We could call it the "Blithering Idiots."

Bye.

why is it a tragedy?
what's wrong with mixed blood?... if it were up to you, royalty would probably still be in their incestous cousin-marrying relations (when you're only allowed to marry someone of higher or equal stature as yourself and your a princess, your choices dwindle fast)

If everyone mixed up well enough, in the end we'd only be one race. no more racism (sure something else would take its place. like raging nationalism or something.) But what harm would it do if everyone just mixed it all up?

Sorry buddy globalization is in full effect, and there is nothing you can do to hault this ongoing force. That's nice that having a homogenous society worked well for the Japanese. You could say that communism worked well for many countries in the past, but you can see that is switching over due to globalization, and other various forces. Quit living in the past there pal, wake up and smell the present. Diverseness makes the world go around, and having an absolute homogenous society would be the epitome of boredom. It seems you need a dose of culture as well as eduacation, and so maybe you won't end up developing into a waste of physical matter. Mixed cultures is not only a beautiful thing, it makes the whole world a more interesting place to live.

Viper II... if I knew you in real life, you would likely be dead or paralyzed from the neck down by now.

There is nothing wrong with having mixed blood! I'm part Caucasian (mostly from germany) and Indian. There's nothing wrong with me. Goddamn, man. You sound like Hitler.

Sorry, but I get really pissed off when people act like that.

There are currently no words in the english language to express my rage at that person.

I was walking with my Japanese friend at school today and there were so many Japanese students giving me bad looks. When I got home, I emailed her and asked why Japanese people don't like black people. She told me that she thinks it's because Japanese people think that cultures are supposed to stay together and not mix with one another.

Is it because Japan has been so closed to foreigners for the longest time, I think there was an Emperor that made it illegal for foreigners to visit Japan awhile ago, I guess this is still in the Japanese minds, even today.

That's pretty sad if you ask me.

Awhile ago, I took two Japanese girls out and we ran into a group of Japanese tourists, all they did was stare at us, one of the girls I took out has an I don't want to be here look. I took them home and never called them again.

I don't want to be a target for staring everytime I go out with my Japanese friends or maybe one day I find a Japanese girlfriend, but I'm thinking that will never happen.
You are in the U.S. right? I mean not in Japan. I assume it's a kind of big city from what you said that "there were so many Japanese students". It's a bit funny to hear that kind of story especially outside of Japan. because Japanese are the foreigner at there... ;)

I am Japanese myself, and I could come up with only a few ideas below when I thought about why they acted like that.
1) they were simply racist. Sad, but there are always racist people not only in Japan but evrywhere in the world...;(
2) It's not you but your Japanese friends that those Japanese students and tourists were staring at. There are some Japanese hip hop/r&b queen wanna-be(Is this sentence make sense?) and act like as if they were one of them and think it's cool.

Juding from the situation that you wrote, I felt the reason like secound one is much more make sense to me.

Anyway, My suggestion is... Try not to think about race too much, give them a smile and maybe "Konnichiwa!(hello in Japanese)" when you get stares. Those kind of attitude will probably tells them that you are a respectable parson. That might be a good way to break the ice with them too. Or you can simply ask one of them why they give you bad looks. :)

P.S. I have been exposed to racism a few times in some foreign countries. but those things didn't bothered me that much. I even don't consider them racists. I consider them just stupid people! :P

Here's what I don't get: what's so great about Japanese people? Seriously, I've seen people type things here about how Japanese or Asians are so great, but where is the proof? From what I've seen there are as many Japanese idiots as there are white, American, black, or [insert racial or national group here]. Don't get me wrong, I'm not saying that I hate Japanese people or that I love white people, far from it. I just don't understand why people get so hung up on judging an entire group of people based on the actions of a very limited population. Maybe I'm just too different than some people here, but I'd rather hate someone because I've talked to them and they're an idiot than basing my hate on some superficial criterion like skin color or nationality.
