Why do the martial arts hurt so much?

If you are already in good shape and you are pushing yourself just a little harder, I see no problem with that, so long as you aren't still doing it about an hour or two later. But, when I dropped out of class for about 6 months and I came back, pride made me work just as hard as the other blackbelts.

Apparently my face turned purple and I was sick for about a week.

It all depends on the person really, but I agree with Ewok85 that if you aren't careful, you will be messed up by 40. Look at how athletes have to retire before then, and the kind of shape football players are in >_<

Well if you suddenly start exercising & you haven't for a wile then most of that is called a muscle burn. If you got pounded then that could be another reason. If you've done a lot of marshal arts since you were a kid then you may not have noticed how hard you were working. But stopping for a wile & then starting again will definitely show you.

Pain of discomfort, you must learn how to fight off.

Pain of an injury, you must heed to and back off from training if necessary.
