I agree with you - kids shouldn't be playing them and it is their parents fault. Or would you let your kid watch hard-core porn, even though it has a 21+ rating? Also agree with the wrestling comment - kids are regularly hurt and permanent harm is done when they attempt to replicate their idols 'moves' without realising that it is a carefully choreographed display with professional stuntpersons.
I also have a beef with the 'oh they see violence in the games and go out and practice it for real' argument. Individuals are prone to certain behavioural traits, I don't believe that a game converts someone into a killing machine. You don't see kids who watch the Care Bears run out and commit ranom acts of kindness? Or whole classes run off and build a raft and run away from home to sail down a river after they had to write a book report on Tom Sawyer, do you?
Most 'activist' are aligning themselves with such causes do so because they are attention ******, using the unfounded (read: fabricated) violent video game cliche as their vehicle.

I voted I wouldn't mind either way, come on, violent video games is just that, games. There is no way someone should be able to confuse real life with a video game, >.>. I don't confuse real life with video games, but, like with anime similarly, I act out techniques that appear on them because it is fun, people say that I am weird, but I don't mind, since I am enjoying myself, liek wehn you do cosplay, that sort of feeling.
 
I wouldnt say I was for or against it in itself but I am for the freedom to make games wih violence in them. I play them and there is obviously a market for them. To me it's wrong to ban games or censor them when a rating system was created to advise buyers on the content.
 
im F-ing sick of video games being blamed for violent children ive been playing what you would call mature games since i cud operate my thumbs and i have no desires of going out at night and bludgeining some one to death with a blunt object but i do think t-virus outbreak would be pretty cool LOOT TILL YOUR HEARTS CONTENT HAHAHAHA.
 
Seriously... I was played M rated games long before I should have (I believe Resident Evil 2 came out when I was like.. 12), but I've never even hit a person before. Well, I did once, but it was an ex-boyfriend that I caught cheating on me with my ex-best friend, he got a punch in the nads, but the video games had nothing to do with it. Some people are born without a conscience, and with or without video games, they will be criminals. I've never enjoyed the GTA series, but one of my favourite games of all time was Goldeneye for the 64, and I played that with my parents.

Parents need to take a more active role in what their children are watching/playing/reading/looking at on the internet. I see far too many kids in my niece's generation (early-to-mid 90s) with absolutely no rules or boundaries whatsoever. I had a curfew, I was only allowed to watch "grown-up" movies if my mom deemed them appropriate, and even then she'd watch with me and explain things to me throughout. I was instilled with a strong sense of right and wrong, but so many kids nowadays... I mean, when there are 13 year olds having sex, there's obviously something wrong.

I'm sick to death of video games being the scapegoat for every shooting that goes on which involves teenagers. Gaming is no longer something only nerds do, it's as wide-spread as playing football, so people can't really be shocked that these kids who commit crimes are playing video games. Everyone plays video games. My mom plays video games. The Jamaican down the street plays video games. They really need to start blaming themselves, and not the media.

and just to tell you ... we in K.S.A we buy ONLY copied ones ( Games ... programs ... movies ....)

why buy a game with 50$ while you can get copied one with 2$ only ??
 
yeah. i've been playing violent video games since mario jumped on a goomba
and i don't even support ANY war and am against the death penalty too because gov'ts which are all dopy and do not have the right to take a human life, plus what if they've got the wrong person?
 
Ok, in my insignificant opinion, that's just stupid. I know some disturbed people might get influenced by violent games/movies/songs etc. but that's their own fault. I mean, does any game actually say, Hey you, grab a gun and go shoot some people? I think they'd kill anyway, in some point of their lives, but they just get inspired by the violence in media. Violent content shouldn't be banned.
 
When this comes up in the media (at least once a year) i laugh. Ive been playing video games since i was about 5 and so far ive not shot any ducks, jumped on any turtles or tried to break a brick with my head to get the money inside. The most recently thing i can think of is the VA tech shootings where they said "he watched oldboy and played counter strike". So what ive watched oldboy twice and use to play CS till 4am everyday for 7 months. Its just shafting responsiblity. Without generalizing too much alot of these things happen in the US and really you have to wonder why that is. Some say rappers but the whole world listens to the same songs, video games...again the whole plays them, movies...AGAIN the whole world watches the same movie and korean movies are worse censorship wise so if anyone else has an idea I'd like to know it.
 
In the end it's the parent's resposibility to teach their kids the difference between fantasy and reality. No little Johnny, you can't pop a cap in little Bobby's a**.

It's because a) there are a lot of wierdo's out there who can't tell the difference between real life and video games and b) there are a lot of parents that let video games and TV raise their kids that video games get a bad rep. People need to take responsibility for their own behavior.
 
I don't know, the knee-jerk reaction is to say "no" and that violent video games provide stress-relief etc, but the same is said of violent pornography and when a study was done on it it showed that after watching it, the participants had more misogynist feelings than before etc. I don't think they should be banned or that they cause people to murder etc., but I do think maybe they de-sensitive some people a little to violence.

I don't much like GTA, but if violent games are banned, so are some of my favorites.
If violent games are to be banned, then so should violent movies.

People kill because they've been pushed off the edge by some force in society. Video games don't tend to be enough to push someone off the edge.

A nasty troll on youtube would sooner drive someone to kill than any video game.
 
I think you could make a case for Halo 2 on Xbox Live giving some people the urge to kill out of pure frustration. I do think the video game market is pretty much dominated by violent video games, but people who say they bring out violent behavior in people are just looking to lay the blame on anything they can find. Until kids aren't getting singled out, picked on, ignored or beaten up at school, there will always be those few that strike back.
 
banning violent video games is a rediculous idea. Being a good parent is an awesome idea.
 
Ban FPS's, not cause they're too violent, but because there's so much arguing because of them, its just annoying that neither pro nor contra fps's people can quit whining.
 
I don't think that games should be banned for being too violent, then they should ban violent movies and tv shows as well. People do need to be more responsible however. If kids are playing Mature games and doing bad things that they learn from them, its the parents fault. People need to not buy their little kids games that are meant for adults. Its that simple. There are many things that adults can enjoy in a game, that they won't go out and reenact in real life, like a child might. Parents need to be parents. Thats what Wii is there for... for kids. Play something Mario, not Manhunt.

This thread is tooooo biased. The stats are completely tilted towards gamers as it is on this site in the video games category. Its pretty obvious mostly gamers enter here to read and post. And since I am one of them I voted against the ban.

Also, the banning depends on the degree of violence in the game; it could be mild fantasy violence(final fantasy, tekken), war violence(medal of honor/call of duty), or extreme bloody/sick violence (manhunt series)

And myself, I agree with bans on nasty games like manhunt 2 and games with rape/torture eeeehhhww!
 
Ban crap games like manhunt, not because of the violence, but because they're simply poor games for retards. I love violence, when it actually has a reason, there's none in manhunt.

The game Manhunt does have a reason for violence. The guy is trying to escape before he gets killed (If I can remember correctly)... Not that I think it's a good game, cause it's not. But there is a violent incentive within the theme of the game. I also don't know of any game where you are allowed to rape anyone. But why ban it? Think logically about this. Not just because it's icky.

I voted against, and definitely wouldn't mind if they banned video games, gave the kids a football, cricket bat, post a traffic control officer at the entrance to the street, and away we go!

Bring back communication skills.. The kids are so lacking nowadays.

Possibly old fashioned ideas?
