Where did the chat go?

What is the likelihood of getting chat back, I wonder....

Maybe if we beg and whine enough, we can get it back!

I WILL NOT beg for a Chat or anything but sure, I will whine.

I want CHAT! Now! All the other kids at school have Chat!
It's not FAIR! I'm holding my breath until you give me Chat! :auch:

aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaasddddddddddddddddsafdsggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggg

You do not have enough posts yet to add URLs to third-party websites. what does it mean?

I think it would be awesome to have a jref IRC chat room... and this is coming from someone who hates IRC (well, power-hungry ops more than the medium itself).

IRC is very idler-friendly. In fact, there's even a game called IdleRPG where you advance by idling. :D

There doesn't seem to be much begging and whining from memebers.... Do they even look at this thread? Only if it were titled "Is Wanting To Have The Chat Back Racist?".....🙂

/whines to get Chat back~!

I sometimes feel this place is usually very serious lol.

I wonder this one too. I, obviously, wasn't here from the beginning to know of the little to no existence that existed in the chat-channel, but with a community this big I expected there to be a chat-channel. Even if it is only temporary and not registered, one can still make a channel in any server just by /join #channelish, right? I would just enjoy a joint place where one could meet all the people of this site. But I respect the restrictions.

(PS. excuse the surviving of this old thread, in case that is frowned upon)

bahhh bring the chat backkkk

btw, the oekaki chat. ive been on there before with my two friends, but they'd always send me a link. When i go to the main website, i when to the chat area, and when i click on the links it just takes me to a page with a bunch of wikipedia links. How do u get to the chat? ?

Hummmm?? I wonder??

Maybe a new chat room would take off if we make it classy and exclusive?A member has to pay $15US to be able to have access to the chat room. Then for those who can't afford that or can't use PAYPAL, the "Chatroom Elite" can invite guests of their chooseing to come in for a chat. Kind of like those ritzy nightclubs where people line up and fight & pray to get in, LOL. That way, there would be no cost to JREF, and those who paid to get a chatroom would be inclined to use what they paid for.

FYI: we have reimplemented and updated the JREF Chat. Just click the "FlashChat" link in the top menu and kindly report any flaws or errors you encounter.

Japanese chat still causes issues. I typed a whole sentence, then converted, then tried sending and sometimes the whole thing would go through; sometimes I would have to send it in two parts. I wonder if it has something to do with Flash....

Yes, I have encountered the same issues. I'm not sure whether that's related to Flash or not, I recommend to use shorter sentences. On the positive side, there seem to be no more problems related to encoding.

Thank you, Admin JP!! Oh, the FUN I'm gonna have with this thing.....🙂

When I tried to convert a short sentence, my browser (Opera) froze, too.

Also, is there a way to see who's in chat like we used to?

That was really handy to have.

It was nice to have the box that told us when someone was in chat. Hopefully a box just has to be checked to get it back.

I have just installed the textbox on forumhome indicating who's in chat right now. I am not sure about the Opera issue though. Do you still have problems converting sentences?

That's all right if I can't use Opera. I've decided to switch to Firefox to login here, thank you! 😌

Regarding conversion, I've tried to type in Japanese in the chatroom and wasn't able to send sentences in complete form (because of the frequent use of Enter key in Japanese). Neither was I able to select the correct kanji characters (which I need to do by pressing the space bar) adequately. I could manage "ikkatsu henkan" but with incorrect kanji conversions, which both Japanese IME and ATOK are prone to do.

I do. I'm on a Mac running Firefox, and although something like 5 out of 7 sentences went through fine, there were still the two that got cut in the middle.

epigene, you can't use the arrow keys to move to the word you want to change the 変換 of? That's how I do it. Mistyping is another story, though, and one that I'm afraid can't be dealt with with this chat system. You just have to delete it all and start over.

The arrow key function in IME? I haven't checked that thoroughly yet. But I know that the kanji selection function becomes lost when any of the arrow keys is pressed.

I need to press the space bar to trigger IME/ATOK to show a selection of kanji alternatives, which does not seem to work correctly. I can get the correct kanji only if it is the No. 1 conversion alternative. Example: 窶堙坂?堙按ーツ≫?樞?ーテ板 but not 窶堙坂?堙按ーツ≫?樞?「@ or 窶ーテ etc. This is necessary especially for homonymic kanji words (combinations of 2 or 3 kanjis) and phrases, which only the most common ones appear correctly. In short, the space bar function in IME/ATOK works only when pressed for first time for the selected segment.

Also, the Enter key, which must be pressed to confirm the selection, triggers the typed segment to be sent before completion. (I need to check into "when" -- probably this function also works only when pressed for the first time for the target segment.)

In short, the space bar and Enter key functions are at issue in chat.
This may be a Windows IME/ATOK issue.

Mistyping isn't the issue here. I know when things going wrong is my fault. 😌

I'm not sure I'm understanding what you're saying, so I'll try to explain what I do, which works. After having typed a whole sentence, if I get a word that isn't right (say ツ縦窶佚? instead of ツ渋窶佚?, I use the directional arrow keys on the keyboard to move the highlighter (?) to that word, then hit the down arrow key, and I get a list of alternatives. Spacebar does the trick too, so it seems wierd to me that you can't hit spacebar more than once and get more than one alternative. I'm on a different OS with a different input editor, though, so the differences may lie there.

Also, the Enter key, which must be pressed to confirm the selection, triggers the typed segment to be sent before completion. (I need to check into "when" -- probably this function also works only when pressed for the first time for the target segment.)

I have this problem too. I tried to see when it happened, but couldn't come up with anything. I thought for a second it was when the page was reloading, or resending data or whatever, but that seems to be all the time, so I don't know.

Mistyping isn't the issue here. I know when things going wrong is my fault. 😌

I know it isn't. I wasn't suggesting that it was. I was saying that even if the problem of sentences being cut in the middle gets solved, there still will be no solution if you mistype something, convert it, and then want to correct it other than to delete the whole thing and start over (unless there's some trick I'm not aware of).

I'm so glad the chat is back (:

...now only if people would use it...

Meh, just when I thought I could get some distraction at work nobody seems to be in the chat room, come on people :p
